GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Crossing Guard ensures the safe crossing of school children, pedestrians, and community members at designated intersections or crosswalks. This position promotes public safety by directing pedestrian and vehicular traffic, monitoring surroundings for potential hazards, and serving as a visible community presence before and after school or during special events.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists children, pedestrians, and community members in safely crossing streets at designated locations.
- Directs traffic and ensures compliance with traffic laws and safety procedures.
- Monitors surrounding conditions to identify and respond to potential safety hazards.
- Communicates safety rules and provides clear instructions to children and pedestrians.
- Maintains reliable presence at assigned posts during scheduled hours.
- Uses safety equipment such as stop signs, reflective vests, and hand signals appropriately.
- Reports unsafe conditions, traffic violations, accidents, or incidents to supervisors or law enforcement as required.
- Provides courteous and professional assistance to the public.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience working with children, the general public, or in a safety-related position preferred
- Training in traffic safety procedures and First Aid/CPR preferred.
- Knowledge of basic traffic safety laws, procedures, and pedestrian right-of-way rules.
- Skill in effective verbal communication with children, parents, motorists, and the public.
- Ability to remain alert, attentive, and visible in various weather conditions.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and respond quickly in emergency or unsafe situations.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and maintain consistent attendance.
- Ability to maintain positive, professional, and cooperative relationships with school staff, law enforcement, and community members.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Light to Medium Work: Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects such as safety equipment or traffic control devices. Work involves frequent standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing, and using hand and arm signals to direct traffic and pedestrians. The employee may occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or climb. Visual acuity is required to observe traffic conditions, recognize potential hazards, and ensure the safety of pedestrians.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed outdoors at street crossings, intersections, or other designated locations. The position requires exposure to varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow. The role involves standing for extended periods of time, continuous alertness to traffic and pedestrian activity, and occasional exposure to environmental hazards such as vehicle exhaust or roadway debris. Tasks may involve interactions with children, parents, motorists, law enforcement, and community members in a fast-paced and safety-sensitive environment.
