Work from site policies, procedures, experience and training with minimal guidance and instruction from supervision. Exercise radiological stop-work authority, if needed, when radiological conditions have changed or unforeseen hazards are encountered. Perform radiological control functions using instrumentation to detect and measure radiological conditions; frequently under poor field conditions, such as inadequate lighting and ventilation, and extreme temperatures. Work may involve climbing ladders and scaffolds, walking up/down several flights of stairs, and prolonged standing and walking. Note: The detection and measurement instrumentation includes standard portable radiation and contamination survey instruments, continuous air monitors, area radiation monitors, liquid and air effluent monitors, and counting room instruments. Conduct contamination and radiation surveys associated with radioactive material movements and transfers on-site, shipments off-site, and receipts from off-site. Conduct conditional and unconditional material release surveys. Use radioactivity sampling media such as disc smears, filter papers, and planchets. Perform routine observations and monitoring of radiologically controlled areas to verify there is no migration of contamination and that radiological controls, including postings, are adequate. Audit personnel access into radiologically controlled areas and follow-up on contamination incidents involving personnel and/or facilities. Assist in job preplanning. Recommend appropriate protective clothing and respiratory protection equipment based on pre-work radiation monitoring. Monitor jobs in progress and facility conditions to confirm that protective clothing and equipment requirements are met. Determine and update area radiation exposure rates, contamination levels, and airborne radioactivity levels and post area with appropriate signs and barricades. Establish appropriate control measures in routine, special and emergency situations. Analyze and log sample results. Prepare air, water, soil, and surface smear samples and count activity in accordance with established procedures. Calculate airborne concentrations and environmental releases. Interpret monitoring data and calculate exposure rates, dose, airborne concentrations and environmental releases. Issue the appropriate monitoring dosimeters in accordance with established procedures. Perform source and integrity checks of monitoring equipment to verify proper operation. Perform integrity/leak checks of radioactive sources. Document all survey activities. Wear personal protective equipment/clothing, which may include lab coats, coveralls, cloth hoods, shoe covers, gloves, hard hats, safety glasses, safety shoes, harnesses, snake boots, and respiratory protection equipment (e.g., full-face respirators, SCBAs, fresh air hoods, and plastic suits). Provide technical guidance and assist in training less experienced personnel in home department and other departments. Perform IH survey functions as designated by supervision. Work any shift assignment. Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.
Provide full and independent job coverage in all levels of contamination, radiation, and airborne radioactivity levels. Monitor radiological conditions using instruments weighing up to 25 pounds. May involve use of protective clothing and respiratory protection equipment. May involve work in poor field conditions such as inadequate lighting and ventilation, and extreme temperatures. May involve climbing ladders and scaffolds, walking up/down several flights of stairs, and prolonged standing and walking. Document all survey results. Recommend protective clothing and respiratory equipment requirements. Interpret monitoring instruments to calculate rates, dose, airborne radioactivity concentration and environmental release. Issue appropriate dosimeters. Check monitoring equipment to ensure proper operation. Audit personnel access into radiologically controlled areas. Provide technical guidance to management, less experienced personnel and employees performing work. Post radiological work areas with appropriate signs and barricades. Prepare air, water, soil, and surface smear samples and count activity in accordance with established procedures.
