About the role: 

We are seeking a highly capable and motivated Assistant Director  Major Projects (London Secure Children’s Home) to lead the delivery of a major pan-London capital project. This is a unique opportunity to oversee the design and construction of a new facility that will support some of the most vulnerable children across the capital. 

Funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and delivered in partnership with London Councils, this high-profile scheme will require strong leadership, strategic oversight, and expert stakeholder management. 

This is a 12-month secondment role, reporting to the Corporate Director and working closely with senior officers, including the Chief Executive and Cabinet.

Key Responsibilities 

You will: 

  • Lead the delivery of a pan-London c. £100m capital scheme  
  • Manage a small team of expert project managers 
  • Oversee multi-disciplinary design and technical teams 
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key partners, including the DfE, London Councils, and the Association of London Directors of Children’s Services (ALDCS) 
  • Ensure the project delivers on its strategic objectives and benefits for children across London 
  • Provide regular updates and strategic advice to senior leaders and governance boards 
  • Manage and mitigate risk, ensuring the council’s financial position is protected throughout the design and delivery  

You will be supported by a dedicated Project Director and Senior Project Manager, as well as expert teams from the DfE and London Councils. 

As a senior member of the Capital Strategy, Delivery and Estates leadership team, you will also contribute to the wider strategic direction of the service and help embed a culture of continuous improvement.

 

Qualifications and Requirements: 

We’re looking for a determined and dynamic leader with: 

  • A proven track record of delivering complex capital programmes in a challenging economic climate 
  • Strong financial acumen  
  • Experience managing diverse teams and working cross-departmentally  
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with political awareness and strategic insight 
  • A collaborative mindset and a passion for reducing inequalities and improving outcomes for vulnerable communities
