General Description:  The City of Jacksonville is seeking an energetic, creative, and personable self-starter who is community-oriented to serve as a Recreation Coordinator.  The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic go-getter who thrives on engaging the community through recreation. This position involves performing intermediate technical and professional work in planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing a variety of Adult Services special events, trips, programs, classes, and activities, as well as related duties as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Assistant Services Supervisor, with supervisory responsibilities for assigned part-time and seasonal staff.

The salary posted is the full salary range for this position.  The starting salary is expected to be in the range of $45,377.49 - $58,990.67 depending on qualifications.






Position Duties

Planning, scheduling, coordinating and supervising activities and special events, trips, classes and activities, or athletic programs; implement effective marketing strategies; preparing records and files. Monitoring athletic events; ensuring participant and spectator safety; preparing courts and fields; preparing and maintaining records and files.   • Assists with planning, developing, and implementing a variety of recreation programs, classes and special events, and aquatic programs for citizens of all ages. 
  • Determines program and event, selects location and orders supplies.
  • Maintains continuing contact and liaison with City departments, outside agencies, sponsors, participants, visitors and citizens to ensure effective presentations of the event.
  • Prepares and maintains records, attendance reports and other records related to splash pad, classes, events, and programs.
  • Collaborate with internal and external customers to maximize marketing strategies to increase awareness of recreation services and programs
  • Assist in designing and promoting events via fliers, news media and schools.
  • Coordinate, train and support the volunteers for events and programs.
  • Attend meetings of public entities and civic associations concerning the City Wide Services programs and services.
  • Maintains records of recreation events programs, aquatic programs standings and related information
  • Registers program and event participants; receives receipts and processes fees.
  • Sets up and ensures participants are aware of appropriate rules, regulations, policies, brackets, etc.
  • Participates in the short and long term planning process for City Wide Services.
  • Helps prepare annual budget request.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in recreation or related field and at least 6 months experience in supervising organized recreational activities and at least 6 months experience in the care of recreational facilities and equipment. Bachelors’ degree preferred.

Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.  Possession of a CDL P-endorsement preferred or the ability be obtain within 6 months of hire. Possession of CPR and basic first aid certifications.  

Other Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of the principles, rules, materials and equipment requirements of a variety of recreation activities and ability to give routine instructions; thorough knowledge of the social, general knowledge of the regulations, procedures, laws and availability of appropriate state and federal grants for citizens activities and programs; thorough knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public recreation, psychology, and sociology, and of personal health and hygiene; general knowledge of first aid practices and techniques; ability to adhere to program standards and objectives outlined by superiors, to lead and instruct groups in games, sports and other recreational activities; ability to resolve disputes with firmness and impartiality; ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public.
