Position Title: Assistant Girls Basketball Coach – High School
Reports To: Athletic Director (in conjunction with the High School Principal)
Supervises: Student-athletes and student assistants; collaborates with other coaches under the direction of the Head Girls Basketball Coach.
Job Goal
To assist in developing student-athletes’ basketball skills, game strategies, and physical conditioning, fostering both individual and team growth. This position emphasizes teaching discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, self-confidence, and pride in accomplishment—while modeling character and excellence in all areas.
General Expectations
The Assistant Girls Basketball Coach plays an important role in promoting a positive image of the school and athletic program within the community. This position requires professionalism, patience, and the ability to manage the unique demands of athletics—including extended hours, travel, and adherence to high standards of conduct. Coaches are expected to prioritize student well-being and sportsmanship over a “win-at-all-costs” mindset and to demonstrate sound judgment and common sense in all situations.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to organize, support, and contribute to a successful basketball program.
- Prior coaching experience in basketball preferred.
- Strong knowledge of the technical and tactical aspects of basketball, with a commitment to continued professional growth through clinics, observations, and collaboration.
- Ability to serve as a positive role model for student-athletes, demonstrating integrity, leadership, and sportsmanship both on and off the court.
Responsibilities:
Program Support
- Assist the Head Coach in implementing the philosophy, skills, and techniques of the basketball program.
- Support the planning and execution of practices, conditioning sessions, and game strategies.
- Ensure compliance with all district, state, and league policies and regulations.
- Communicate effectively with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, and Principal regarding program needs and operations.
Student-Athlete Development
- Mentor student-athletes to model and demonstrate trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
- Encourage academic excellence and monitor student-athletes’ classroom performance and behavior.
- Promote teamwork, resilience, and a positive attitude in all competitive and non-competitive settings.
- Ensure the safety and supervision of student-athletes during practices, games, and travel.
- Communicate team expectations, training rules, and disciplinary procedures clearly and consistently.
Administrative & Logistical Support
- Assist with scheduling, travel coordination, and facility preparation for practices and games.
- Help manage and maintain uniforms, equipment, and inventory, ensuring proper use and care.
- Support compliance with all eligibility, medical, and parental consent requirements.
- Report injuries promptly and assist with follow-up protocols as directed by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.
Public Relations & Communication
- Represent the basketball program positively to students, parents, school staff, and the community.
- Promote the program within the school and encourage student participation.
- Maintain positive relationships with game officials, volunteers, and media representatives.
- Assist in sharing schedules, results, and program updates through approved communication channels.
Professionalism & Conduct
- Exhibit loyalty and support to the Head Coach, Athletic Director, and school leadership.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
- Continue developing coaching skills and knowledge through clinics, training, and professional collaboration.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support the success and integrity of the basketball program.
