About the Department
Primary functions will be to make electrical repairs and service work. This will include troubleshooting electrical issues, electrical repairs on AC high voltage & low voltage applications, DC voltage applications, install and repair metal conduit, repair lighting fixtures including interior and exterior high and low voltages and other general electrical repairs at the County’s facilities. Perform other duties as assigned.
The hiring salary for this position is $70,637 annually; full salary range for this position is $50,003 - $86,091 annually.
Position Duties
- Maintain and repair electrical systems in County facilities as needed;
- Performs preventative maintenance and inspection on electrical equipment and panels;
- A working background in the electrical field is required, 4 or more years;
- Using various devices including ammeters, voltmeters, thermal meters, underground cable detection devices, as well as typical tools of the trade;
- Installing & replacing wiring, a wide range of lighting fixtures both interior & exterior, electrical controls and electrical devices;
- Computer system experience with basic programs, computerized lighting controls and the ability to pick up on other computer based programs;
- Adhering to state and local codes and regulations;
- Documenting the work completed and materials used;
- Working with contracted electricians, other contractors along with other County personnel;
- Working in adverse weather conditions including snow removal efforts;
- May:
- Check, wire and repair electrical systems including building electrical panels and control panels for various equipment;
- repair and maintain high security electro-mechanical locking systems controls wiring;
- repair controls for plumbing, water and sewer systems, pumps and valves;
- related hardware fixtures, and other equipment;
- operate a County vehicle;
- order and keep stock of materials used;
- Will be required to provide on-call emergency services on a rotating schedule;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to gain thorough knowledge of St. Mary’s County Government policies and procedures;
- Knowledge of mechanical maintenance procedures, including, but not limited to electrical work preferably at the journeyman level or higher;
- Ability to effectively communicate with other staff and members of the public;
- Ability to prioritize tasks in order of importance and urgency;
- Possession of a valid Maryland drivers license;
- Basic math skills.
Other Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED;
- Four years or more of related experience, preferably, with at least four years of electrical experience as a journeyman electrician or higher;
- Technical training, education, and/or experience in the electrical field;
Additional Information:
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical to determine ability to perform job-related functions;
- Pass an extensive background investigation;
- Possession of a valid Maryland Drivers license;
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Work demands occasional strenuous effort. For example, handling of moderately heavy boxes, moderately heavy tools, equipment, or materials of 30 to 120 pounds.
Work may involve risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, constructions sites or machines. Employees may be required to use protective gear such as boots and gloves; ability to climb ladders, work in and around manholes and work on construction sites, may require working in adverse weather conditions.
