POSITION SUMMARY

Barton Malow Company is seeking a Self-Perform Project Engineer to join our team on a battery storage energy system project in Saginaw, MI. This role focuses on providing technical and field engineering support for self-perform construction operations, including concrete, steel, and other self-perform scopes. The Project Engineer will plan, develop, coordinate, and monitor on-site construction activities, ensuring quality, safety, and productivity goals are achieved. Acting as a liaison between field supervision, project management, architects, engineers, and owners, the Self-Perform Project Engineer ensures seamless communication and efficient project execution.

 

 


KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical and engineering support to self-perform crews in the field, ensuring design intent and construction methods align with project specifications.
  • Support the layout, quantities tracking, and productivity reporting for self-perform work.
  • Coordinate with superintendents and foremen to plan daily and weekly work activities and resolve field challenges.
  • Manage and maintain project documentation, including submittals, RFIs, and as-built records.
  • Assist Procurement with material takeoffs, purchase orders, and vendor coordination for self-perform scopes.
  • Participate in developing and maintaining the project schedule, specifically for self-perform operations.
  • Enforce and model corporate safety policies and procedures on the jobsite, supporting Barton Malow’s commitment to a zero-incident culture.
  • Assist with site logistics planning, equipment coordination, and resource management.
  • Track and support change management, including preparing cost impacts and reviewing contractor and supplier quotations.
  • Coordinate plan reviews and permit processes with local and state municipalities as needed.
  • Prepare and distribute daily reports, meeting minutes, and progress documentation.

 


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, or related field.
  • 2–3 years of construction experience, including internship or professional experience supporting field operations; experience in self-perform or industrial/energy work preferred.
  • Strong understanding of construction means and methods, particularly for concrete, structural steel, or other self-perform trades.
  • OSHA 30-Hour certification preferred.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and able to be self-directed in problem-solving.
  • Proactive attitude with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork.
