Child Search Nurse
Position Description:
The Child Search Nurse is responsible for conducting health screenings and assessments of children aged 0 – 22 to help identify, locate, and evaluate children who may be in need of special education services that are not currently enrolled in school.
Reports To:
Executive Director of Health and Related Services and Director of Health Services
Scope of Responsibility:
- To meet the standards of performance for nursing assignment developed by Jefferson Parish Schools and all applicable local, state, and federal guidelines.
- To know and adapt the standards of nursing practice to an educational setting. Works with the Child Search Multidisciplinary Team.
- Performs sensory and psychomotor screenings and physical assessment as needed and appropriate for the child’s developmental level for those referred through Child Search and for private or parochial schools, only if deemed as a critical need.
- Secures and evaluates comprehensive health and developmental history through personal interviews with parents/guardians and medical data from Health Care Facilities for students ages 3-5.
- Requests the physician orders and current medical information as needed.
- Evaluates health information and make specific health care recommendations as needed for inclusion in the multidisciplinary reports.
- Participates in individual case staffing with members of the student evaluation and Support Services teams for students ages 3-5.
- Collaborates with the school nurse to obtain current and/or additional medical/health information on students who have been referred through child search.
- Conducts or review initial medical/nursing assessment of students to determine stability for school entry.
- Facilitates and participate in the development of individual student health care plans for school entry.
- Identifies general medical training needs of school site and ancillary staff.
- Writes school recommendations for health services needed during the school day.
- Reviews student evaluations that require health services.
- Completes the necessary documentation for services provided in the Child Search program.
- Assists with the development of Individual Health Care Plans at the school sites as needed.
- Performs other related duties as may be required by the Director of Health Services or the Executive Director of Health & Related Services.
Skills and Qualifications:
We seek detail-oriented, independent self-starters who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to raising student achievement and who have a record of high performance in challenging situations. Successful candidates will also demonstrate:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required
- Current licensure by the State Board of Nursing to practice as a Registered Nurse
- Strong communication skills in multiple settings
- At least five years of successful experience working with students with disabilities and special health care needs
- Experience in the provision of non-complex health maintenance and writing and implementation of Health Care Plans.
- A high degree of professionalism, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities, while consistently demonstrating sound judgment and disciplined thinking.
- CPR - BLS certified
- Current Ancillary certification with the Louisiana Department of Education.
Physical Involvement:
Must be able to operate office equipment. Standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting up to 10 pounds is required.
