Organization Description

The Center on Colfax has grown to become the largest LGBTQ+ community center in the Rocky Mountain region. The Center is a collaborative leader that positively impacts the lived experience of LGBTQ+ people in Denver and Colorado by creating inclusive programs and events, fostering connections, and leveraging the individual and collective strengths of the community. In addition, the Center produces Denver PrideFest/Parade/Pride 5K, the largest Pride celebration in the Rocky Mountain Region. 


Position Description

The Senior Manager of Finance is a key member of The Center’s management team and is responsible for leading the organization’s accounting and financial management functions. This position ensures the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of The Center’s financial reporting and supports sound fiscal stewardship of the organization’s resources.

The Senior Manager of Finance manages all day-to-day accounting operations, oversees the monthly close process, prepares financial statements, and ensures compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulations. They will collaborate closely with the Vice President of Operations and Finance, the Chief Executive Officer, and program leadership to develop budgets, monitor performance, and align financial strategy with The Center’s mission.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive nonprofit accounting experience, exceptional analytical skills, and a personal commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, and community empowerment through responsible financial management.


Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Management and Accounting

  • Leads and manages the day-to-day accounting functions, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and general ledger, as well as backup for Payroll. 
  • Maintains accurate and timely financial records in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for nonprofit organizations.
  • Manages month-end and year-end close processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, and preparation of financial statements.
  • Prepares and analyzes monthly financial reports for the Vice President of Operations and Finance, Chief Executive Officer, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors.
  • Monitors organizational cash flow and prepare forecasts to support operational and programmatic decision-making.
  • Ensures proper allocation of restricted and unrestricted funds, including tracking grant and contract revenues and expenses.
  • Manages chart of accounts and ensures coding consistency across departments and programs.
  • Supports annual audit preparation, coordinates with external auditors, and ensures timely completion of audited financial statements and Form 990.
  • Manages the Pride accounting office during annual Pride Fest.
  • Oversees compliance with state and federal regulatory filings.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Leads the annual budget development process in collaboration with the Vice President of Operations and Finance, CEO, and program leadership.
  • Provides financial analysis, projections, and modeling to inform strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Works with program leadership to monitor budget-to-actual performance and provides ongoing training and support in financial literacy.
  • Develops financial dashboards and KPIs for internal management and board review.

Internal Controls and Compliance

  • Designs, implements, and maintains strong internal control systems to ensure accuracy, integrity, and compliance with all financial policies.
  • Ensures compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and donor restrictions.
  • Develops and updates finance policies and procedures, ensuring staff understanding and adherence.
  • Oversees proper documentation of accounting processes and financial protocols.

Grant and Contract Management

  • Partners with the Development and Program teams to prepare budgets for grant proposals and track financial reporting requirements.
  • Ensures proper documentation, expenditure tracking, and financial reporting for restricted grants.
  • Collaborates with the Development team to reconcile grant records with accounting data and confirm revenue recognition standards are met.

Team Leadership and Collaboration

  • Supervises and coordinates any third-party accountants, financial consultants, and finance-related vendors.
  • Serves as a strategic partner to leadership, offering clear financial insights that inform programmatic and operational decisions.
  • Collaborates interdepartmentally to ensure financial alignment with mission objectives and organizational priorities.
  • Builds strong working relationships with board members, particularly within the Finance and Audit committees.
  • Identifies trends and feedback loops to continually refine messaging and outreach strategies. 

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; master's degree in Business Administration or Accounting preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with at least 4 years in a nonprofit leadership role.
  • Extensive knowledge of nonprofit GAAP, fund accounting, and compliance standards.
  • Experience managing audits, budgets, and financial reporting for organizations with multiple funding sources (e.g., grants, donations, special events).
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Microsoft 365, especially Excel.
  • Experience with BILL AP/AR, and integration with QuickBooks Online preferred.
  • Experience with HRIS/payroll systems such as Paylocity, ADP, or Gusto preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and effectively to non-financial stakeholders.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and manage sensitive information.
  • Passing a criminal history background check required.

Working Conditions 

  • In-office work model with in-person environment with hybrid and virtual collaboration as needed.
  • Work in a fast-paced, mission-driven, and evolving professional environment.
  • Must be available to work Denver PrideFest the fourth weekend of June each year.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work for meetings and events required.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, with reasonable accommodation.
