Job Summary:

The Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist is responsible for evaluating, planning, and implementing evidence-based speech, language, cognitive-communication, and feeding/swallowing interventions for infants, children, and young adults within the Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, Distinct Part Subacute, and Outpatient Programs.

The SLP collaborates closely with an interdisciplinary team—including physicians, nurses, occupational and physical therapists, respiratory therapists, and case managers—to maximize communication abilities, swallowing safety, and overall participation in meaningful daily activities.

This position offers the opportunity to serve a diverse pediatric population, including those with complex medical conditions, neurological impairments, developmental delays, post-surgical needs, traumatic brain injuries, and technology-assisted communication needs.


Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and Treat: Conduct comprehensive assessments of speech, language, cognition, voice, fluency, and feeding/swallowing abilities using standardized tools and clinical observation.
  • Develop Plans of Care: Design and implement individualized treatment plans to address communication, cognitive-linguistic, and swallowing goals tailored to each child’s medical condition and developmental level.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work collaboratively with physicians and the rehabilitation team to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care and goal achievement.
  • Family & Caregiver Education: Provide education and training to families, caregivers, and staff to facilitate carryover of therapy techniques and strategies in the home and community.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in accordance with Totally Kids policies and applicable regulatory standards (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission).
  • AAC & Assistive Technology: Evaluate and implement augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and train patients, families, and staff in their effective use.
  • Feeding & Swallowing: Perform bedside or clinical swallow evaluations, make diet recommendations, and collaborate with the medical team to ensure patient safety.
  • Quality & Safety: Participate in performance improvement initiatives, continuing education, and professional development to support best practices and positive patient outcomes.

Qualifications


Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program
  • Current California Speech-Language Pathology license
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from ASHA
  • Current CPR/BLS certification (American Heart Association)
  • Solid understanding of pediatric communication development, swallowing disorders, and evidence-based intervention strategies

Preferred:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of pediatric SLP experience in an acute, rehabilitation, or hospital setting
  • Experience with medically fragile, ventilator-dependent, or tracheostomy-assisted patients
  • Proficiency with AAC evaluation and implementation
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) documentation systems
