About the Role:
Under the direction of the Utility Superintendent, performs all functions necessary for the completion of public works projects.  Performs all tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of the water and sanitary sewer system of the City of Fitchburg. Decisions on day-to-day activities are made independently.  Supervision received is limited.  Daily work plans are discussed with daily review of progress.  There is frequent interaction with the public and other Public Works employees.  This position is part of an on-call rotation and must be able to respond within forty (40) minutes.

SALARY RANGE:
Utility Maintenance Worker with CDL  $27.24/hr  - $31.13/hr
Utility Maintenance Worker without CDL $24.91/hr - $28.47/hr
THE PAY AS SHOWN INCLUDES THE 2% COST OF LIVING ADJUSTMENT IN EARLY 2026.

Position Duties

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
 
This position does not have an assigned snowplow route and will be expected to assist the Utilities supervisory during snowstorm events for the continuing operations of the Utility department. 

Essential Functions:

  • Read well meters and maintain daily records.
  • Add fluoride and chlorine and maintains daily records.  Tests for residual levels daily.
  • Maintain pumping equipment, water mains, chemical feed equipment and well houses.
  • Take static and pumping water levels and keeps records.
  • Operate supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA).
  • Make inspections and necessary repairs of water laterals.
  • Raise, repair and lower curb boxes and manholes to the appropriate grade.
  • Install, test, and maintain all meters and reads quarterly.
  • Operate hydrants semi-annually to flush mains and makes necessary repairs.
  • Exercise valves yearly and makes necessary repairs.
  • Review water and sewer plans and specifications.
  • Prepare pumpage reports.  Take water samples and send to State laboratory.
  • Locate mains and laterals for construction and other improvements.
  • Clean, repair, and keep records of mains in sewer system.  
  • Complete necessary field paperwork for water and sewer records. 
  • Keep records of daily work functions.  Fill out and submit time distribution of activities.
  • Must be available to work outside of normal work hours for emergencies. 
Other Functions:
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance such as oil changes, lubrications, fueling, and cleaning.
  • Use shop hand and power tools for maintenance of City vehicles and auxiliary equipment.
  • Assist in keeping of maintenance records and perform necessary preventive maintenance.
  • Perform rudimentary welding, grinding, and drilling.
  • Perform building maintenance and housekeeping functions as required.
  • Assist other Public Works operations in the performance of their functions as directed by the Utility Superintendent or Street or Parks Supervisor. 
  • Prepare and submit reports of all accidents, personal injuries, and other Public Works functions.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or the equivalent desired.
  • Three years operating large trucks or similar equipment desired.
  • General vehicle maintenance desired.

Licenses, Certifications, etc.

  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License is required.  CDL endorsement preferred but not required.

Other Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with electric equipment desired.
  • Knowledge of machinery used in the repair and maintenance of water systems, road construction plumbing principles, and general mathematics.
  • Familiarity with water systems.
  • Ability to interact effectively with the public, and to operate a variety of mechanical equipment. 
  • Prefer knowledge of computer operations and SCADA system.
  • Ability to think logically to make decisions; interpret information in mathematical, written and diagram form, such as statistical reports. 
  • Ability to identify and analyze problems, evaluate alternative solutions and make sound judgments, especially in stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain adequate attendance. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City elected and appointed officials, employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse individuals and groups.
