Medical Assistant
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides professional nursing care of clinic patients following established standards and practices. Supports clinic staff by performing duties to enhance their productivity.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & AUTHORITIES:
- Performs general nursing care to patients. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
- Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
- Observes, records, and reports patients condition and reaction to drugs and treatment to physicians. Dispenses medication as directed.
- Maintains timely flow of patients.
- Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriate information. Instruct patients in collection of samples and tests.
- Arranges for patient testing, admissions and insurance referrals.
- Responds to and refers incoming telephone calls. Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions.
- Maintains and reviews patients records, charts, and other pertinent information. Posts tests and examinations results.
- Maintains exam rooms for necessary supplies and materials. Ensures cleanliness. Prepares a list of medical supplies needed.
- Screens and refers pharmaceutical representatives.
- Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
- Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Maintains lab and controls for lab machines where applicable.
- Blood draws and IVs per doctors orders. Maintain safety for patient and nurse.
- Will assist with duties required to keep clinic operational.
- Answers telephone, takes messages, and gives routine information in accordance with established procedures.
- Files records daily in appropriate sections of patient charts and keeps charts in proper order.
- Maintains chronological order in placing reports in patient records.
- Destroys outdated records and medication following established procedures for retention and destruction.
- Makes up new patient charts. Repairs damaged charts. Assists in locating and filing records.
- Follows medical records policies and procedures.
- Is familiar with the Quality System including the Quality Policy and Procedures.
- Ensures applicable patients are reminded of periodic check-ups.
- Performs related work as requested.
- Maintains outdate logs and medication logs.
- Assists provider in obtaining information to adhere to professional standards and policies.
- Performs EKGS.
- Removes sutures and performs dressing changes.
- Authorizes prescription refills as directed by the provider.
- Coding for approval of patient tests
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, ABILITIES):
- Medical patient care experience and training of a general nursing nature.
- Computer proficiency recommended.
OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS,ETC)
- BLS and/or ACLS certification recommended.
- Phlebotomy certification recommended.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 100 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Well lighted environmentally controlled office settings. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
