Description
This role is ideal for a junior or early-career developer who is eager to learn, collaborate, and grow. You’ll work within a supportive team to maintain and test existing applications while expanding your technical skills to assist in developing new, innovative features. You’ll also contribute to modernizing our application portfolio, helping to build out new microservice-based applications that power our next generation of public service technology.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain web applications using Java, Groovy/Grails, and related technologies.
- Support the maintenance of existing applications, including fixing bugs and optimizing performance.
- Assist in the development of new features and applications from established specifications.
- Collaborate with team members, customers, and stakeholders to define project requirements and goals.
- Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to ensure code quality and stability.
- Implement secure coding practices and help ensure compliance with standards, including handling of sensitive data such as payment information.
- Gain hands-on experience with Oracle and Postgres databases, JDBC, and SQL.
- Learn about and contribute to cloud-native development and AWS architecture.
- Explore AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude.ai) to improve efficiency and code quality.
- Work with APIs and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) integrations to connect systems.
- Contribute to modernization efforts by helping build and support microservice applications.
- Perform other duties as assigned to achieve departmental goals and timelines.
Qualifications:
- Some experience (through coursework, internships, or projects) developing web or Java applications.
- Familiarity with Java or another object-oriented programming language (willingness to learn Groovy/Grails is a plus).
- Understanding of databases, SQL, and basic database design principles.
- Interest in or exposure to cloud environments (AWS or similar).
- Curiosity about microservices, API integrations, and secure coding.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Eagerness to learn, adapt to new technologies, and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective teamwork and customer interaction.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience — self-taught developers are encouraged to apply.
