The City of Lake Worth Beach invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Equipment Mechanic.
This is a Non-Exempt, Full-Time position based on a 40-hour work week pay range $23.89 - $29.86. This position is part of the Public Employees Union (PEU) collective bargaining agreement. The individual in this position will work in the Public Works Garage located at 1749 3rd Avenue South, Lake Worth Beach, FL 33460.

JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and major repair of various types of heavy construction type and waste transporting vehicles along with other heavy equipment. Emphasis on hydraulics. Performs difficult mechanical work in diesel and automotive equipment - trucks, buses, and trolleys under direction of garage supervisor with considerable latitude of independent judgment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Repairs and overhauls variety of automotive equipment including light and heavy-duty trucks, graders, rollers, waste transporting equipment, cranes and related equipment.
- Performs preventive maintenance and inspections to determine need for repairs, sometimes through use of electronic test equipment.
- Performs more difficult and complex maintenance and repair tasks such as replacement of engines, transmission and differential gears; replaces motor mounts, exhaust assemblies and cooling systems.
- Performs service calls and emergency repairs in the field when needed.
- Road tests heavy equipment upon completion of repairs before returning to active use.
- May assist other mechanics to acquire skills in maintenance and repair of heavy automotive equipment.
- Operates automotive and construction equipment as necessary.
- Prepares records and reports on work accomplished.
- May do welding when required.
- Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:
- Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.
- Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to automotive and mechanical maintenance repair.
- Considerable knowledge and skill in the use of various types of shop tools; drills, pressers, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines and other tools necessary for proper functioning of the position.
- Considerable knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of heavy equipment utilizing hydraulics.
- Ability to diagnosis the defects of motors and bodies of automotive and construction equipment.
- Ability to adapt tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
- Ability to inspect work of others and train subordinate mechanics.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or GED. Considerable journeyman level experience (5 years) in heavy and mechanical equipment repair, with emphasis on diesel powered and complex heavy-duty equipment with hydraulics.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:
Current valid Florida driver's license, ASE certified a plus, additional certifications essential to the position will be taken into consideration.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work in various weather conditions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
