About the Department
General Function:
Skilled work in the operation of moderately complex, heavy equipment. Work involves the operation of equipment with mechanical controls, requiring proficiency and ability. Work is performed under the general supervision of a foreman, except in assignments that are routine. Maintenance Mechanic II will be expected to know basic skills and the use of all materials used in underground water/wastewater construction.
Work performance is evaluated through observation of results obtained and occasionally while work is in progress.

Position Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Safely operates backhoe loader, trencher, (wheel and chain type), dump and water/wastewater trucks, vac trucks and other related types of equipment used for construction or maintenance of complete water and wastewater systems.
- Is responsible to learn service routes and be familiar with the street layout.
- Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use, and performs routine service and maintenance as needed.
- Performs a variety of skilled tasks using equipment with mechanical controls requiring some dexterity and manipulative ability.
- Responds to verbal requests from line foreman or designee while working near marked water line locations.
- Provides appropriate assistance as required.
- May have to perform repairs on equipment that breaks down while in service. May assist other water/wastewater crews in the Department in non-hazard type work when equipment is being serviced, repaired, etc.
- Will be responsible to clean and wash down equipment periodically.
- Have good working relations with foreman, supervisor, and general public.
- Performs other job-related functions as requested.

Type of Appointment/Work hours:
- Full-time/Regular in-person position.
- Standard workweek, which is forty (40) hours of work per week consisting of five (5) days of eight (8) hours per day. The workday may be varied for the efficient delivery of public service.
- Will be required to work other than the standard workweek on occasion, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Will be required to work occasional overtime or shift assignments, if applicable.
Minimum Qualifications
Requirements:
- Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalency.
- Two (2) years of experience in water/wastewater-related field with a minimum of six (6) months of experience working in water/wastewater installation/repair.
- Ability to learn the water/wastewater system of the City as far as service area, districts and location of facilities.
- Nature of the job requires physical strength, coordination, and dexterity.
- Outside work, sometimes under adverse weather conditions, is required.
- Water distribution or Wastewater Collection “C” License preferred.
- Ability to cross-train as scheduled.
- Must have experience with pumps, electrical/mechanical equipment, and plumbing.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, manholes, and trenches.
- Respond to emergency call-outs.
- Must be able to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Must pass a skills test.
- Must possess a valid Florida CDL class “B” with tanker endorsement license, with a clean driving record.
- Must pass the background screening process.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance:
- The employee must successfully pass a background screening process and comply with the City’s Drug-Free Workplace policy.
