Job Description:
The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (HIDA) at Arizona State University is seeking a Director of Fiscal Business Services to lead and manage the Institute’s financial and business operations. This position is responsible for strategic planning, financial oversight, and administrative leadership across all HIDA units, including six schools on the Tempe and Los Angeles campuses, the Mesa Immersive Experience Center (MIX), the ASU Art Museum, the ASU FIDM Museum and the HIDA Box Office.
Working closely with the Dean and other members of the leadership team, the Director serves as a strategic thought partner in budget decisions, financial forecasting, and long-term fiscal planning. The Director oversees a multi-million-dollar annual budget that primarily supports operational needs for academic programs, courses, and administrative functions. This role also provides leadership for a team of business services professionals, fosters a culture of collaboration, and offers guidance and support to Business Operations Managers across the Institute.
Position Salary Range:
$94,300 to $126k, depends on experience within the posted range
Essential Duties:
Serve as a strategic partner to develop and implement budget and financial models that serve the needs of the Institute and that optimally develop, distribute, and deploy resources.
Work collaboratively with and provide support, strategic direction, and oversight for the business operations of the Herberger Institute, its schools, and the ASU Art Museum.
Serve as Financial Budgeting & Forecasting Lead for the Institute, including managing Adaptive Planning Forecast system entries, reports and balancing.
Communicate with and act as a resource for School Directors and their Business Operations Managers.
Manage and track enrollment growth funding, internal and external commitments, and internal school revenue distributions.
Manage Central University fiscal deadlines, processes and policies, relating to budgeting, forecasting, purchasing, purchasing card, travel, reconciliations, and scholarships.
Oversee HIDA-wide financial system access requests.
Oversee HIDA-wide Foundation account management for all donor funded gifts.
Assist with university merit exercises, coordinating with HIDA HR, schools/units and leadership.
Oversee HIDA tuition remission, University graduate scholarships, and block grant processes.
Manage PSIF budget requests/restructures, coordinating usage and updates.
Provide leadership for the Herberger Dean’s Office fiscal business staff; build a culture of collaboration between staff and all schools/units; and contribute to the annual evaluations of school/museum business staff.
Create and maintain account plans and summaries through Excel workbooks.
Serve as a HIDA Audit & Compliance Lead, ensuring adherence to all fiscal and compliance requirements.
Create for Institute leadership a variety of high-quality reports, summaries, financial statements, and statistical analyses, often working closely with HIDA’s Manager of Data Analysis.
Interpret and apply finance and budgeting policies and procedures set forth by the university or other governing agencies.
Solve problems, recommend changes in procedure, and continuously look for opportunities to improve processes.
Serve or represent the Herberger Institute on committees or boards as requested by the Dean or the university.
Coordinate or assume other duties or projects as assigned.
Desired Qualifications:
Ten (10) years of experience in finance, accounting, or budget management/modeling
Experience in higher education finance and budgeting
Experience working in the design and arts field
Proven leadership and people management experience, including the ability to motivate, develop, and influence individuals and teams to drive performance and achieve desired outcomes
Experience in working collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds with varied learning styles
Experience with ASU budget and finance systems and resources
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to build and manage complex workbooks, perform financial modeling, and create analytical reports using formulas, pivot tables, and data visualization tools
Evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills
Experience in using data presentation skills
Experience in communicating effectively with academic leadership and finance teams
Working Environment:
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse 75 percent; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work 10 percent.
Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds 15 percent.
Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
