Job Description:

ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

Pick-Ups/Deliveries 

  • Provide customers and donors with courteous and diplomatic service. 

  • Coordinate pick-up and delivery schedule with supervisor. 

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with community donors. 

  • Maintain accurate and complete records of pick-ups. 

  • Load, unload and move products and materials by hand or with basic material handling equipment. 

  • Ensure products in delivery vehicle are stored safely and securely. 

  • Maintain knowledge of legislative and company policies such as Health & Safety Regulations, provincial and municipal highway traffic act. 

  • Ensure paperwork regarding pick-ups (i.e., invoices and donor records) are submitted for processing. 

  • Provide support to community projects and events as requested by supervisor. 

 

Vehicle Maintenance 

  • Responsible for daily and overall safety, cleanliness, maintenance and operation of all Community Services vehicles and records of such. 

  • Complete routine vehicle checks before all trips, in accordance with CVOR and/or company policy; maintain accurate and complete driver trip logs. 

  • Monitor and report any maintenance and repairs of vehicles to the supervisor. 

 

Inventory Control/Storage 

  • In Coordination with other Community Services team members 

  • Ensure all Community Services storage areas are organized, clean and safe. 

  • In collaboration with CS team ensure food pantries are well stocked. 

  • Maintain adequate inventory, reporting any surplus or deficiency to the supervisor.  

  • Ensure all products are handled, stored, and used appropriately, ensuring safe food handling practices are followed and older product is used first. 

  • Ensure freezers and refrigerators are monitored on a daily basis; record temperatures and report any concerns to the Supervisor or designate. 

  • Provide regular updates to the Community Services team regarding new or excess items to be distributed through various programs. 

  • Coordinate and assist in the unloading of incoming product with other London Community Services team members, volunteers, donors, etc. 

  • Exercise discretion regarding acceptance and use of donated goods, consulting with the Supervisor when needed. 

  • Work with the Supervisor to coordinate waste minimization, handling, and tracking; providing analysis and recommendations to minimize waste. 

  • Ensure volunteers are advised as to the prioritization of activities and have the resources needed to complete these tasks.  

 

Financial/Administration 

  • Establish and maintain an appropriate inventory tracking tool to provide analysis of donations for the Community Services and provide required reports to the Supervisor.  

  • Develop and maintain appropriate documents/forms and best practices guidelines for food handling, storage, distribution to ensure the efficient use of donations/goods. 

  • Ensure all paperwork is completed for all donations received.  

  • Provide regular updates to the Supervisor or designate regarding food distribution activities. 

  • Identify and discuss operational issues with your supervisor and in consultation determine methods to seek resolution.  

  • Build rapport with community agencies/ food banks, as well as other Salvation Army ministry units in the ON Division to promote mutual sharing of consumables donated to London Community Services. 

 

Health and Safety 

Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. 

  • Responsible to use personal protective equipment and clothing as directed by the employer. 

  • Responsible to report workplace hazards and dangers and report workplace injuries. 

  • Responsible to work in a manner as required by the employer and use the prescribed safety equipment. 

 

Perform other duties as required 

 

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT  

Internal: 

  • Supervisor, staff, volunteers from various Community Services Programs and Corps 

  • Participate in regular staff meetings to review operational effectiveness, changes in policies and procedures, and in-service training. 

External:  

  • Community and Donors.  

 

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY 

  • This position reports directly to the Executive Director or designate.   

 

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:  

  • Participate in food bank materials management such as donations/product flow and distribution of same.  

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  

  • Flexibility in scheduling is required, some weekend and evening work may be required.   

  • The performance of the job requires the ability to sustain the daily routine of moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.), reaching, bending, sitting, standing, and walking for long periods of time, packing/un-packing delivery vehicle.  

  • Exposure to scents and fumes.   

  • May be exposed to disagreeable people including the occasional angry and/or abusive client/public, working with people from all walks of life and backgrounds. 

  • May be required to wear Salvation Army branded clothing provided by the employer.  

  • Will be required to wear safety shoes/boots throughout their shift. 

  • This position will require frequent travel and work at various locations throughout the City of London. 

 

Normal work schedule – The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule as per operational requirements Monday to FridayNormal hours being 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and includes a ½ hour paid meal break.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:  

  • Completion of Secondary School 

  • Forklift certification or willingness and ability to be trained to operate forklift 

 

Experience and Knowledge Requirements: 

  • One year of prior experience driving a commercial vehicle 

  • Good command of large vehicles (up to 26’) 

  • Experience in warehouse environment and knowledge of warehouse management/inventory systems, including shipping and handling 

  • Ability to operate pallet jack and other warehouse equipment  

  • Experience training and overseeing volunteers (preferred) 

  • Must be highly aware of safety awareness and procedures involving commercial vehicles 

  • Valid Class “G” driver’s license with clean driving record current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

  • As the face of The Salvation Army, you must have the ability to represent The Salvation Army in a positive, professional, and engaging manner; possess and exercise good interpersonal relationship skills by displaying tact, courtesy, and patience. 

  • Ability & willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening. 

  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. 

  • Ability and willingness to provide or obtain a valid Safe Food Handlers and First Aid/CPR Certifications.  

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $18.47 to $19.19 with a maximum of $19.91.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
