Garden City Community College seeks a paraprofessional tutor who is passionate about helping students build their knowledge and skills in the subject areas of science and mathematics. Garden City Community College is a vibrant and dynamic community college. Officially designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution, the College serves a student population which reflects the area’s rich diversity. The College serves approximately 2,000 students across multiple populations including on-campus, online, and area high schools and has a history of strong program options in both transfer and technical education. The Mary Jo Williams comprehensive Learning Center (CLC) employs professional staff, paraprofessionals, support staff and student tutors. This position is for a Title III Grant-funded part-time paraprofessional focusing specifically on tutoring in science and math. A paraprofessional is part of the CLC team that coordinates, facilitates, and administers the daily business of the Learning Center. A paraprofessional is a multi-talented, mature individual who is an integral part of the team. The position pays $17.00 per hour. Weekly work limits (maximum of 29 hours per week) are strictly enforced.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Tutor students with diverse academic needs, primarily Science and/or Mathematics.
- Supervise student tutors.
- Participate in CLC Tutor Training throughout the semester—industry-recognized tutoring certifications available at multiple levels of the training.
- Create a safe, welcoming environment for CLC clients.
- Complete record-keeping responsibilities.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
Experience: Six months to two years of similar or related experience. Education: A two-year college degree
Interpersonal Skills: Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential elements of the job. Work involves much personal contact with others for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation.
Other Skills: Decision-making, problem-solving and effective time management is a must. Excellent interpersonal, oral communication and customer service skills are required. Ability to maintain confidential information in a professional manner is required. Good written and oral communication skills are required.
Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items.
Work Environment: Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
