This opportunity is based in our New York, NY office but offers flexibility to work from home part of the work week.

JOB SUMMARY

CSG East seeks a Regional Director to lead a dynamic team as it approaches its next century of service.

CSG East is a unique membership organization as the only nonpartisan community of states serving the three branches of state government in the northeastern United States. CSG East seeks a Regional Director to provide leadership to this cohesive and dynamic association.

Membership includes 18 jurisdictions: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont, as well as the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Quebec are international associate members.

CSG East is governed by an Executive Committee of appointees from each of the member jurisdictions. Organizational bylaws provide for a Leadership Council of Executive Committee members and 4 additional governance committees:

  • Annual Meeting Committee
  • Annual Review Committee
  • Budget Committee
  • Nominations Committee

CSG East's principal activities and services to members include:

  • Annual Meeting: CSG East's membership convenes for a 4-day policy forum each year that attracts 500 public ocials, academics, and representatives of the nonprofit and business communities.
  • Policy Summits: CSG East organizes 1-day summits for policymakers, experts, and key stakeholders on topics identified by the members.
  • Leadership Development: A 5-day leadership development program for up to 30 elected and appointed ocials and sta from across CSG member jurisdictions is facilitated every year.
  • Customized Training and Research: CSG Sta are responsive to requests from public ocials and their sta for customized training and professional development as well as targeted policy research and analysis.
  • Policy Committees: CSG East stas 13 ongoing policy committees and aliates for members and sta to connect across jurisdictions on common priorities.

The current composition of the CSG East team consists of a regional director, 8 full-time staff members and 5 part-time policy consultants. CSG National provides operations support services including financial management, accounting, payroll and human resources.

The next CSG East Regional Director is a nonpartisan leader who is passionate about the role of state governments as the cornerstone of American democracy.

This individual understands what the three branches of government do, why that work is important and understands and fully supports the roles, responsibilities, and impact of legislative, executive and judicial staff and members. This individual is politically astute, deftly navigates ambiguity and consistently seeks to find common ground to advance outcomes that benefit and build CSG East and the governmental institutions it serves.

Regional Director responsibilities include:

  • Leadership: Provides leadership and vision to the executive committee, CSG East sta and other constituents in achieving the organization's goals and purpose. Excels at implementing organizational change in response to the shifting needs of states and a dynamic political environment. This is a high-profile, high-energy position, requiring a self-motivated individual who is comfortable working with a wide variety of constituents with diverse interests.
  • Relationships and Member Engagement: Authentically engages and values the perspectives and contributions of others. Builds strong and sustainable relationships that translate into a fully engaged membership, eective collaborations and fundraising results. Creates excitement for the organization's initiatives and gains access to critical constituents to influence state and federal policy. Good negotiator, who has the capacity to build consensus. Ensures that the interests of highly visible members are equitably balanced with the needs of the sta members and other constituents.
  • Communications: Promotes CSG East to the media, funders and partners. Presents complex information clearly, accurately and transparently. Leader who will serve as CSG East's public representative, speaking on behalf of the organization in the states and to the media, policy makers, partners and a diverse range of constituents. Demonstrates agility with digital media and has outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Integrity: Is honest and consistent in dealings with others and has a reputation for doing so. Maintains stewardship and accountability for the organization's overall operational, ethical, and fiduciary integrity within the guidelines and policies set by the executive committee and applicable laws and/or regulations.
  • Fundraising: Supports the development of the organizational plans, systems and metrics necessary to foster and sustain successful fundraising. Understands the dynamics of fundraising and builds lasting relationships with funders and donors to position CSG East for resource diversification and growth. Is glad to request financial support for CSG East and personally raises money. Expands membership, specifically in the judicial and executive branches of state government.
  • Business Acumen and Planning: Leads creation of strategic plan, ensuring coordination and alignment of all activities, initiatives and programs within CSG East's mission and purpose. Runs a fiscally sustainable organization and brings mission criteria and financial rigor to opportunity assessment. Establishes metrics for performance and measures of success for all facets of the organization's operations. Assesses organizational capacity to implement strategies, identifies gaps in systems and stang, and develops plans for correction, contingency and succession; anticipates factors accelerating or impacting success.
  • Governance: Has experience working with and/or serving on governing boards. Advocates and supports the executive committee's performance and accountability in furthering this organization's outcomes.
  • Manager: Committed to having a dynamic and diverse sta. Genuinely values CSG East employees and their well-being. Empowers the team and does not micromanage day-to-day activities.
  • Fiscal and Budget: Has strong fiscal and budget skills, including the ability to read and understand financial statements and cash flow reports, manage the annual budget, and oversee financial compliance. Key skills involve strategic financial planning, risk management, and the capacity to analyze financial data to ensure the organization's long-term health and stability.

Requirements

CSG East seeks a proven leader who has a passion for the work of state governments and is driven to enhance CSG East's efficacy in serving its goals and purpose.

The ideal candidate has had extensive non-profit leadership experience and success leading nonpartisan high-performance teams that deliver excellent results. This person must exhibit success in collaborating with a wide variety of partners and stakeholders. Experience with convening diverse groups of people to address common interests in a collegial, transparent and highly participatory manner is essential.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to understand and operate effectively within a nonprofit-governing environment. This person will support active officers and board committees.

Experience with leading and participating in a strategic planning process is required.

This executive will be experienced in and enjoy building teams, structures and systems to support a sustainable organization. This individual has a strong and proven history of nonprofit fundraising.

As a key spokesperson for CSG East, this individual must have strong oral and written communication skills. High integrity, humility, and sound judgment are essential to success in this role.

At a minimum, a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university is expected. A degree at the graduate level is strongly preferred.

Salary and Benefits

The Council of State Governments offers a competitive salary $200,000 - $250,000 and a comprehensive benefits package.
