JOB SUMMARY

The Operations Manager oversees the daily operations of hauling activities, ensuring efficient and safe performance of all routes, staff, and equipment. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading depot operations, managing labor and operating costs, and maintaining strong communication with both internal departments and municipal partners. The Operations Manager plays a critical role in driving operational excellence, employee development, and customer satisfaction.

 

ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provide leadership and oversight of all depot operations, including drivers, dispatchers, and support personnel.
  • Enforce and model compliance with all company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Monitor, control, and report on labor and operating expenditures; identify opportunities to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of municipal contracts; build and sustain positive relationships with municipal representatives and key stakeholders.
  • Plan and implement routing, logistics, and operational improvements to enhance efficiency and service performance.
  • Oversee and participate in employee performance management, including performance reviews, coaching, counseling, and disciplinary actions.
  • Collaborate with the District Manager on new bids, proposals, and ongoing contract management.
  • Review and approve employee time-off requests and ensure daily correction of timecard discrepancies.
  • Monitor depot safety compliance, conduct safety audits, and report safety performance to management.
  • Support and oversee daily dispatch functions to ensure all routes are completed on time and in compliance with company standards.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain employee training programs and professional development initiatives.
  • Partner with the Maintenance Department to ensure all equipment is properly maintained, safe, and in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate with other departments on special projects, community events, cleanups, and public service activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REPORTING STRUCTURE: 

This position reports to: Director, Hauling Operations

This position supervises: Drivers, Dispatchers, Supervisors, & Administrative Support Personnel

 

 

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Management, or related field preferred.

Experience:

  1. Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in operations, transportation, logistics, or waste management.
  2. Proven track record of managing teams in a high-volume, fast-paced operational environment.
  3. Valid California driver’s license required; Class A or B license preferred.
  4. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required.

Knowledge & Skills:

  1. Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, develop, and manage a large, diverse team.
  2. Strategic and analytical thinker with strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  3. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  4. Knowledge of DOT regulations, OSHA standards, and industry best practices for safety and compliance.
  5. Ability to interpret and manage municipal contracts and maintain effective relationships with government partners.
  6. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and experience with route management software (e.g., Encore).
  7. Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of interacting with all levels of staff and management.
  8. Results-driven, process-oriented, and committed to achieving organizational goals.
  9. Collaborative team player with a customer-service mindset and commitment to company values.
