SUMMARY

Under general direction, to perform skilled labor related to irrigation systems. Inspect and install irrigation systems, perform modifications, repairs, and adjustments. Ensure timers on irrigation systems are adjusted according to irrigation needs. Oversee the replacement and/or repair of broken or damaged parts. Rebuild irrigation rotors, valves, and other parts as necessary. Review and redline landscape and irrigation plans. Organize and conduct landscape and irrigation field inspections on new and existing developments. Oversee and manage landscape maintenance contracts.

May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower-level staff.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Participate and oversee as necessary in the work of assigned seasonal, part time, or temporary staff; review work to ensure proper irrigation methods and techniques.
  • Determine irrigation priorities and objectives; review established work schedules for assigned crew.
  • Coordinate staff and equipment usage; identify irrigation equipment and material needs; collaborate with staff and contractors as appropriate.
  • Create and coordinate schedules for irrigation related work.
  • Maintain records on equipment and materials usage.
  • Maintain landscape and irrigation inspection records and plans.
  • Ensure adherence to standard safety precautions and practices.
  • Monitor and change timers, controllers, and computers for irrigation system.
  • Train employees in proper work and safety methods for irrigation.
  • Inspect irrigation systems to determine adequacy of coverage area, nature of breaks, and adjustments necessary; make modifications and repairs.
  • Ensure irrigation timers are adjusted including making wiring and other repairs on timing mechanisms; lead and oversee the replacement and/or repair of broken or damaged parts; rebuild irrigation rotors, valves, and other parts as necessary.
  • Assist in the review of blueprints and plans; design and install irrigation systems; perform winterizing and recharging of systems as season conditions warrant.
  • Design, install, inspect, identify, and approve new irrigation systems; coordinate the purchase of new material and equipment.
  • Conduct walk-through inspections on new landscapes and irrigation systems.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose irrigation problems.
  • Remove snow as necessary using City snow removal vehicles.
  • Operate various hand and power tools, and equipment in the performance of assigned functions.
  • Operate various equipment including front end loader, dump truck, jackhammer, snow blower, salt spreader, snowplow, backhoe, excavator, tractor, tandem truck and trailer.
  • Assist with the contract administration for Parks Division contracted services.
  • Coordinate with other departments including attending engineering, pre-construction, and coordination meetings, etc.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Experience: Four years of park maintenance experience including irrigation system design, installation, repair, controller programming, pumps, and hydraulics.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Utah Driver's License
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months, a Utah Commercial Driver's License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 12 months, Traffic Control Flagger, Forklift, Trench Shoring, and Confined Space Certification.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 12 months, a Backflow Tester Certificate.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Operations and activities of a park and cemetery maintenance program.
  • Methods and techniques of repairing and maintaining park and cemetery irrigation
  • Equipment, tools, and materials used in the area of irrigation and park and cemetery maintenance.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.

Skill with:

  • Operating a wide variety of maintenance and repair equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Performing heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in all types of weather.
  • Operating modern office equipment including computer equipment and software.
  • Operating a motor vehicle safely.

Ability to:

  • Design and develop irrigation systems.
  • Interpret, explain, and enforce maintenance policies and procedures and landscape and irrigation standards.
  • Lead and oversee the work of seasonal, part-time, and temporary staff.
  • Monitor landscape and irrigation contractors and construction personnel to ensure work activities and products meet required quality levels and standards.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Be on-call as part of the Parks Division on-call rotation.
  • Work unconventional hours and be subject to 24-hour call as required for the City snow removal program or emergency operations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Update landscape and irrigation installation standards as needed to correlate to the latest industry standards

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 50 lbs.; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations. Difficult working positions. Required to stand, walk, or sit uncomfortably for extended periods. Exposure to weather extremes, dust, fumes, etc.
