Description
Full time/Non-Exempt /40 hours a week, Monday through Friday incorporating occasional evenings and weekends as needed. The Museum is an EOE.
The Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Nevada seeks a detail-oriented and self-motivated Curatorial Assistant to support the daily activities of the curatorial department. Position involves administrative and hands-on responsibilities and exhibition coordination opportunities as assigned. This position reports to the Chief Curator.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITES
- Provide clerical and administrative support for the daily operations of the Curatorial Department, including managing correspondence, tracking research inquiries, processing invoices and receipts, and assisting with departmental organization.
- Research, request, and organize images for publications and communications materials (including the Museum website), and secure copyright permissions for their use.
- Maintain, enter, and digitize exhibition and collection archives, including attaching scans, uploading records, documenting exhibition loans, and cataloging images in Proficio and Excel databases.
- Track and manage exhibition contacts and objects in the database, including artists, lenders, and donors.
- Streamline credit lines, and develop style guide for department, in consultation with the Chief Curator.
- Prepare exhibition labels; write exhibition labels as assigned; assist during installations; and help coordinate exhibitions in smaller galleries as assigned.
- Contribute to the preparation and organization of Museum organized and traveling exhibitions as assigned.
- Manage image requests, and rights and reproduction requests as needed.
- Assist with producing and tracking loan form requests as assigned.
- Assist Chief Curator with updating and managing the exhibition calendar.
- Perform data entry and streamline collection information to improve accuracy and accessibility.
- Respond to and track general correspondence related to individual artists, exhibition submissions, and research inquiries in coordination with the Exhibition Coordinator.
- Assist the department with special projects, as needed; support intern management and track departmental credit card reporting.
- Interact professionally with colleagues, artists, donors, trustees, volunteers, and sponsors.
Requirements
Candidates must have a B.A. in art history or a related field with at least one year's experience in either the curatorial or education department of an art museum or an art gallery is highly recommended. Master’s Degree is desirable. Excellent interpersonal, writing, and organizational skills are required. Knowledge of contemporary art is preferable. Computer proficiency with PC and Mac, and Microsoft Office Suite, including Zoom and Teams. Experience with collection databases. A demonstrated ability to process large quantities of information accurately is important, as well as strong attention to detail. Self-directed, ability to anticipate actions needed. An ability to juggle multiple tasks and meet deadlines is important. Able to exercise discretion and to be a team player in an active office environment. Candidate must be self-motivated, ambitious, and operate in a professional manner.
