About the role
Role Purpose
The Buyer supports the Category Managers and Senior Commodity Buyers with regards to reaching contractual agreements and managing suppliers. The role includes consolidating internal information and producing supplier requests for quotations, communications with internal colleagues and suppliers together with the analysis of information on an operational level.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure that spends above £50,000 (which are generated by way of a requisition) fully comply with the Procurement Procedure PROC/T2/03.
- Collate information and generate Invitation to Tenders & Request for Quotations as appropriate.
- Develop relationships with the suppliers across the business from a procurement perspective and ensure that the service levels are being implemented as per the contractual obligations.
- Hold supplier negotiations as required.
- Ensure that the suppliers supply and work to agreed KPIs where applicable.
- Implement regular reviews with the suppliers where appropriate.
- Ensure that suppliers are assessed and accredited appropriately ahead of commencing contracting works in order to avoid delays.
- Ensure that all suppliers are set up effectively, including the management of PO’s.
- Ensure material or service suppliers are adequately managed in an effective and efficient manner.
- And any other reasonable requests of the function.
- Support the function and business in the drive for continuous improvement.
- Operate in line with the organisation’s values and behaviours.
- Work effectively with other functions/departments, often as part of cross-functional teams.

- Ensure that all products procured comply with all environmental, ethical and health and safety legislation.
- Support both the function and business in the drive for continuous improvement.
- At all times – work to Porterbrook Processes and support in their development.
- Actively participate in any Porterbrook supplier events.
- Support other functions (Finance/Commercial/Fleet) in the internal planning and budgeting for WLMP.
Skills / Experience
An individual who is a self-starter and is effective working either alone or as part of a team to complete the job to the highest level. Excellent technical knowledge/awareness of key railway sub-systems, along with knowledge of the latest digital and electronic systems and the future opportunities offered in these areas for rail is desirable.
- Able to take a pragmatic approach to challenges and actively solve problems before they escalate.

- An ambitious and driven individual, with a track experience of Oracle systems would be desirable.
- This role could require travel between Derby, Long Marston and London sites together with ad hoc supplier visits.
- CIPS Qualified or working towards.
- Qualified to degree standard preferably in Business.
- 3 years’ or above experience in a procurement role.
- Track record of managing suppliers effectively.
- Knowledge of commercial and supply contracts.
- Experience of working in a small team and covering a wide range of responsibilities.
- Excellent commercial acumen.
- Well organised and able to work to deadlines.
- Ability to communicate at all levels, internally and externally.
- Numerate with strong analytical skills.
- Computer literacy (especially MS Office products).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Negotiation skills would be an advantage.
- Experience of e-procurement systems an advantage.
