GENERAL SUMMARY, EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Under direct supervision, the Driver will uphold the rules and regulations described in the Pupil Transportation program, which was created in conjunction with the Nebraska Department of Education; provide exemplary performance in all aspects of transporting students to and from school and to ensure all work performed is completed safely and to District standards
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Successfully complete a physical examination conducted in accordance with the Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation, Section 391.41
- Successfully pass any examinations administered by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles
- Successfully pass the School Bus Driver musculoskeletal screening
- CDL not required
- Subject to random, quarterly drug testing
- Be a minimum of 18 years old
- Clear a state criminal record check and child abuse check
License/Certifications:
A driver shall carry the following documentation at all times while operating a pupil transportation vehicle:
- A current and valid Nebraska driver’s license
- A current and valid Level I or II Instructional Course Card
- A current and valid Nebraska Department of Transportation Medical Examiner’s Certificate
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, WITH FREQUENCIES:
- (F-C) Operate a school vehicle to safely transport students to and from their home to their designated school. Must acquire and maintain a valid Nebraska driver’s license, abide by all local, state and federal motor vehicle laws, maintain a satisfactory driving record, and successfully complete all requirements as detailed in the Pupil Transportation program with the Nebraska Department of Education
- (F) Perform various duties as assigned during “down” times that occur between driving routes, including but not limited to, vehicle maintenance (washing, vacuuming, cleaning interior, cleaning car seats, checking fluid levels, fueling, ensuring vehicle is in good working order), installing and removing car seats, light office duties, such as filing, answering phones; inventory; building maintenance; general office cleaning, custodial work and other duties as assigned
- (R-O) Safely install or remove a child from a car seat - while driver/child interaction is minimal, circumstances may arise where drivers may be required to remove a child from a car seat, place a child in a car seat, or if needed, provide assistance to properly ensure children are buckled correctly in their car seat
- (C) Regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job in order to maintain a student’s regular routines, foster student learning and build student relationships; the ability to perform the identified tasks and possess the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the identified work activities; the ability to perform the identified physical requirements
Examples of Performance Responsibilities (not considered an all-inclusive list):
- Safely operates a motor vehicle to transport students between home and school
- Maintains order among students during trips to ensure safety and stays on schedule to arrive promptly at the destination
- Keeps all licenses and certifications up to date and attends training sessions as required
- Maintains knowledge of first aid procedures
- Has above average knowledge of travel routes and organizes, plans and follows the most efficient routes for safety and punctuality; allowing flexibility as needed to meet unforeseen travel difficulties
- Develops ongoing, working relationships with parents and key contacts at all District locations and serves as a positive role model for staff and students
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the Director, Student Services, including office work, custodial duties, building maintenance
- Makes recommendations to improve service and ensure more efficient operations
- Demonstrates positive attitude, school loyalty, cooperation, teamwork, and safety mindedness on the job
- Keeps school vehicle clean, both inside and out, including any car seats or equipment within the vehicle, and promptly reports any vehicle maintenance concerns
- Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of certified teachers
- Receives direction from Executive Director, Student Services
Job Tasks
- Drive a school vehicle on specified routes or to specified destinations, adhering to time schedules, complying with traffic regulations to ensure students have a smooth and safe ride
- Ensure all car seats, seat belts, chair lifts, and other vehicle equipment is in good working order, installed correctly, and used properly during transport
- Read maps and follow directions, either verbally or in written form
- Administer first aid, if needed
- Perform general safety checks on the company vehicle, such as tires, brakes, fluid levels, oil, fuel, etc. and promptly report any maintenance concerns
- Perform miscellaneous office tasks as directed during daily periods of non-driving
