Deputy Sheriffs are more than law enforcers—they are trusted partners in keeping Sheboygan County safe. In this vital role, you’ll respond to emergencies, investigate incidents, uphold the law, and work closely with the community to create a safer, stronger place to live and work.

Position Duties

As a Deputy Sheriff, you will:

  • Partner with community members to identify and resolve issues of mutual concern.

  • Enforce traffic laws in a fair, consistent, and courteous manner to promote safe driving and prevent accidents.

  • Conduct criminal investigations, determine probable cause, identify suspects, and make arrests as appropriate.

  • Investigate traffic accidents—recording facts, aiding the injured, protecting scenes, and restoring traffic flow.

  • Prepare clear, accurate, and thorough reports for use by fellow officers, the District Attorney’s Office, and other agencies.

  • Collaborate with the District Attorney’s Office to ensure proper prosecution of criminal cases.

  • Respond promptly to requests for public assistance, maintaining peace, preventing injury, and protecting property.

  • Execute legal writs and warrants, and safely transport prisoners or individuals in custody as required.

  • Provide security and traffic control during community events and special assignments.

  • Represent the Sheriff’s Office through public speaking and community outreach, promoting public safety awareness and a professional image.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Sheriff or designee.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Certification:

  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice or a related field, or equivalent Military/Law Enforcement experience.

  • Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification (preferred) at the time of hire.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to complete assignments efficiently and independently.

  • Capable of functioning effectively under stress and managing multiple priorities.

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and take direction when required.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage civilians and inmates professionally across a range of situations.

  • Commitment to confidentiality, integrity, and maintaining positive relationships.

  • Reliable attendance and adherence to department scheduling requirements.

Other Qualifications

  • Scheduled on a rotating 6/3 shift (8-hour days).

  • Must be available for occasional overtime as department needs arise.

  • Requires the ability to respond to physically demanding and high-stress situations.
