About the Department

The Town of Bay Harbor Islands is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Structural Plan Examiner to review building plans and construction documents for compliance with the Florida Building Code, local ordinances, zoning regulations, and other applicable codes and standards. The Structural Plan Examiner plays a key role in ensuring the structural integrity and safety of proposed construction projects within the Town.
The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of structural design principles, code interpretation, and construction practices, along with strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

Position Duties

- Review structural plans, drawings, and specifications for proposed residential and commercial construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.
•Evaluate engineering calculations and details related to structural loads, foundation systems, framing, lateral systems, wind resistance, and other structural components.
•Communicate code requirements and correction notices clearly to architects, engineers, contractors, and property owners.
•Coordinate with Building Inspectors and other examiners to ensure consistency between plan review and field inspections.
•Maintain accurate records of plan reviews, code interpretations, and correspondence.
•Stay current with changes to codes, laws, and regulations affecting structural design and construction.
•Assist the public and design professionals with questions related to structural code compliance and submittal requirements.
•Provide technical support to other Town staff and assist in developing procedures to improve the efficiency of the plan review process.
•Perform related duties as assigned by the Chief Building Official.

Minimum Qualifications

- Associate degree or higher in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related field.
•At least 5 years of experience in structural plan review, structural design, or related construction field.
•Certification as a Structural Plan Examiner from the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB).
•Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Registered Architect (R.A.) in the State of Floridais preferred.
•Must be currently registered with, or have the ability to become registered with, theMiami-Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) within three (3) months ofemployment as a condition of continued employment.
•Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.

Other Qualifications

- Ability to pass the required background check and drug screening
•The employee must maintain all certifications and continuing-education units (CEUs) as required by the Florida DBPR/BCAIB and the Miami-Dade County BORA.
•In-depth knowledge of the Florida Building Code, particularly structural provisions.
•Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, specifications, and engineering reports.
•Familiarity with construction methods, structural systems, and materials used in varioustypes of buildings.
•Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
•Proficiency with permitting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
