P4SUMMARY:
Primary responsibilities include the planning, coordination, and execution of statistically based food safety and food microbiology research projects performed at the laboratory bench, within the pilot plant, and in production facilities, as well as managing a team of individuals who assist in completing projects.
Additional responsibilities include pre-screening research projects to determine applicability and feasibility to Tyson Foods; interacting with external sources such as universities, vendors, suppliers, and government or industry organizations; and collaborating with company team members such as complex managers, operations VPs, FSQA managers, FSQA directors, FSQA VPs, sanitation experts, and engineers.
Other responsibilities include assessing chemical and microbiological risks for plant hazards at the request of upper management and plant personnel to improve product quality and safety, as well as performing other duties as necessary.
Work activities are variable and require sound judgment to complete tasks such as setting priorities, evaluating results, reporting opinions or interpretations, and coordinating activities with others. Assignments are defined, and the approach to be taken is usually determined in coordination with other team members. The work schedule will include weekend and holiday rotations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in a scientific laboratory discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Microbiology, Environmental Sciences, Food Science, etc.).
Experience:
- B.S. and 7 years of experience in food microbiology
- M.S. and 5 years of experience
- Ph.D. and 3 years of experience
- Must also possess knowledge of food production processes, along with excellent technical writing, organizational, and planning skills. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated Tyson ISO-A2LA-related laboratory skills.
Computer Skills:
Requires standard computer skills, including generating technical letters, spreadsheets, and word processing documents; creating macros; developing templates for use by other team members; and preparing complex graphic presentations. Preference will be given to candidates with working knowledge of LabWare LIMS and the ability to perform basic customizations within this database program.
