DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises a work crew (normally from 3 - 10) composed of skilled craftsworkers, motor equipment operators and laborers and gives technical guidance and direction on tasks requiring care of recreation areas, athletic fields, parks and playgrounds; performance of miscellaneous manual tasks requiring the highest degree of skill in planting, seeding, raking, fertilizing and grading, cutting, watering, and trimming of fields and park areas including general duties requiring painting, cleaning skating areas, trimming of trees and bushes, setting up and lining of athletic fields, and operating motor equipment.  Supervises mechanical repair of power mowers, tractors, and other equipment.  Also supervises construction and repair of chain link fences, benches, grandstands, playground apparatus such as see-saws, slides, and swings.    Makes work assignments and enforces safety regulations; maintains discipline; orders supplies and equipment; and reviews work of crew assigned to him/her during progress and upon completion for compliance with instructions and conformance with accepted trade practices.  The Working Supervisor must be skilled in the trade being supervised.  In all cases performs the same type of work as individuals being supervised.  May perform other related work.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must possess a current and valid Commercial Driver’s License Classification B
  • Must present a valid Department of Transportation medical certificate.
  • Must possess a satisfactory driving record
  • Candidates must also provide, upon interview, a copy of their unattested driving record, obtainable at the RMV and dated within the previous six months
  • Candidates may need to register with the FMCSA Commercial Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/register
  • All candidates will participate in an on-road driving assessment as part of the interview process

  • Internal applicants must have a permanent civil service status.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

All labor positions, skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled in the Cambridge Department of Public Works require a combination of:  Lifting between 25-100 pounds, proper bending, squatting, stretching, pushing, climbing, dragging, and pulling.

Other Information:

Exposure to all weather conditions.  Work in a moderate to high noise level environment caused by sound of machinery or powered equipment being used.  Occasional odor may occur during the course of work.  Required to adhere to all safety rules and regulations as well as dress code policies.  Perform other related duties as assigned.
