About the Department

The Town of Bay Harbor Islands is seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Building Inspector to join our Building & Zoning Department. The Building Inspector is responsible for conducting field inspections of residential, commercial, and public construction projects to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations, including the Florida Building Code and Town ordinances.
This role plays a vital part in maintaining safety, integrity, and quality of construction throughout the community. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of construction practices, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to public service.

Position Duties

Perform inspections of building construction, alterations, and repairs to ensurecompliance with approved plans, permits, and applicable codes and regulations.
•Review construction documents and permits for completeness and accuracy prior toinspections.
•Document inspection results, maintain accurate records, and issue notices of violationswhen necessary.
•Communicate effectively with contractors, property owners, architects, engineers, andthe public regarding code requirements and inspection findings.
•Investigate complaints and respond to inquiries related to building code violations orunsafe conditions.
•Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes to applicable building codes, standards, andregulations.
•Attend training sessions, meetings, and continuing education courses as required to maintain certifications.
•Perform related duties as assigned by the Chief Building Official.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; an associate degree or technical training in construction, engineering, or a related field is preferred.
• At least 5 years of experience in building construction, inspection, or a closely related field.
• Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
• Must be currently registered with, or can become registered with, the Miami-Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) within three (3) months of employment as a condition of continued employment.
• Must hold certification as an Inspector in accordance with F.S. 468 Part XII and the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB).
• Additional certifications (e.g., Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing) are highly desirable.
