General Description:

The Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS) is a member of the Superintendent’s extended leadership team and works in close collaboration with the Chief of Staff, cabinet members, and school leaders to ensure that the division’s goals, strategies, and resources are aligned to meet the needs of all students. The DCOS serves as a central coordinating hub for cross-departmental initiatives, facilitates cross-departmental collaboration, and ensures consistent communication and accountability across leadership teams. The DCOS represents the Chief of Staff in meetings and collaborative settings as assigned. The DCOS ensures that strategic initiatives are effectively designed, implemented, and monitored to drive continuous improvement across the organization.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads high-leverage initiatives spanning multiple departments to facilitate cross-departmental problem-solving and alignment.
  • Serves as a central hub for initiatives focused on innovation, equity, and long-term impact.
  • Translates division-wide strategy into actionable workstreams with clear deliverables, timelines, and accountability.
  • Incubates cross-departmental initiatives needing early design, pilot, or turnaround.
  • Leads project design, resourcing, and stakeholder engagement during early phases before transition to implementation teams.
  • Leads or supports time-bound task forces addressing urgent challenges.
  • Designs and implements systems that improve cohesion and service to schools, including standardizing key processes.
  • Standardizes internal processes and leads culture-building initiatives that strengthen organizational health and connectivity.
  • Partners with HR and executive leadership to improve employee experience and organizational health.
  • Serves as a strategic advisor and thought partner to the Chief of Staff.
  • Represents the Chief of Staff in external and internal discussions when needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business, education, public administration, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of seven or more years of increasingly responsible administrative, strategic, or executive-level experience, preferably within a large urban school district or public-sector organization.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and implementing cross-functional projects and initiatives.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking, facilitation, and writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare high-quality reports, strategy documents, and presentations that are clear, concise, and actionable.
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic plans, organizational development frameworks, and performance management systems.
  • Ability to supervise, evaluate, and coach assigned staff.
  • Strong organizational development, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Commitment to equity, innovation, and continuous improvement.
