ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Network Engineer position at the City of Tucson’s Information Technology Department (ITD) will provide general support for the Network Services team including designing and planning network infrastructure, installing and configuring network equipment, troubleshooting network issues, performing system upgrades and patches, and maintaining comprehensive documentation. This position resolves network ticket requests and participates in various network projects as assigned.

Work is performed under the supervision of the IT Manager. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installs and configures a variety of network equipment in accordance with City of Tucson standards and security best practices, including switches, routers, firewalls, wireless LAN controllers, and access points. Performs as a part of both project implementation and ongoing operational support.

  • Provides technical support to customers experiencing network-related issues, with support requests received via email, the Service Desk, or other online communication platforms. Diagnoses and resolves network issues promptly while maintaining a high level of customer service. Troubleshoots both wired and wireless networks using built-in diagnostic commands and advanced network monitoring and analysis tools. Follows established work instructions, policies, and change control procedures, understanding the importance of maintaining proper change management and adhering to City of Tucson best practices.

  • Utilizes of the City of Tucson’s network to design robust and reliable solutions. Evaluates current network capacity to plan for future growth and support the City’s evolving needs. Stays informed of industry trends and emerging technologies, providing informed recommendations for network upgrades and expansions.

  • Performs upgrades and applies patches to network equipment, including switches, routers, firewalls, wireless LAN controllers, and access points. Performs patching activities via servers, consoles, or web interface to maintain security and functionality.

  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with business partners, including internal departments, outside vendors, and contractors, and collaborates on initiatives requiring network services.

  • Conducts wireless site surveys at various City locations, becoming proficient in the associated survey software. Analyzes survey results to identify opportunities for wireless improvements and uploads findings into the management system.

  • Assists with assignments, projects, or activities that support IT or partner organizations, contributing directly or indirectly to the City’s objectives.

  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Bachelor's Degree

Experience:
Three (3) years of relevant experience

Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

Cisco certification (CCNA, CCNP).

Experience and proficiency with Cisco network operating systems.

Experience supporting and maintaining a network environment primarily utilizing Cisco technologies.

Experience with basic wireless concepts and troubleshooting wireless connectivity issues.

Experience with switching concepts (VLANs, STP), including switch configuration and troubleshooting.

Experience with routing protocols (EIGRP, BGP), including setup, configuration, and troubleshooting.
