Job Description

Summary

The Albuquerque Academy Charger Aquatics program is seeking Lifeguards to join our on-call pool. Albuquerque Academy lifeguards guard events throughout the school year and summer, based on their availability. Events include but are not limited to: pool parties, swim team practice, diving practice, swim meets, swimming lessons, and recreational swim groups during Think Summer. Lifeguards also have the opportunity to teach swim lessons. Applicants MUST be Red Cross certified and able to pass a swim test.

Essential Functions

Lifeguards at Albuquerque Academy are expected to: 

  • Provide attentive surveillance of activities in and near the water, from the assigned station, i.e.: sitting or standing on guard stand platform, or roving station on pool deck
  • Prevent injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors
  • Recognize and respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies
  • Administer first aid and CPR, including use of an AED when needed
  • Work as a team with other lifeguards, facility staff, and management  

Lifeguards and swim instructors at Albuquerque Academy also need to be:

  • Knowledgeable and skilled; must maintain skills through attending the regular in-service trainings, be aware of the facility’s EAP
  • Reliable; arrive on time, accept assignments willingly, rotate stations on time, be committed to your work
  • Mature; be a good team member, lead by example by following all facility rules
  • Courteous and consistent; be polite and enforce rules firmly and equally for everyone
  • Positive; show a positive attitude in all job activities, treat others with respect
  • Professional; wear appropriate swim attire and lifeguard uniform while on duty, NEVER bring a cell phone or other electronic device on stand
  • Healthy and fit; exercise, proper nutrition, hydration, and adequate rest are all important for staying conditioned to respond effectively to emergency situations

 

Job Qualifications

 

Education

  • No educational requirement.

Experience

  • Previous experience with lifeguarding is preferred. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • CPR
  • Oxygen Administration (can be certified after hiring if previous lifeguarding employment didn’t offer this training)
  • Water Rescue
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills 

Special Requirements

  • Lifeguarding CPR/AED and Oxygen Certification
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Working Environment

  • Majority of work is performed in an indoor setting at the Natatorium.
  • Work hours are generally outside of the Academy school schedule, mainly early mornings, afternoons, weekends, and summer break.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to climb a flight of stairs and ladders regularly 
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance
  • Ability to dive down to 14 feet depth in water
  • Ability to pass the swim requirement for Red Cross Lifeguarding (currently 200 yard continuous swim, 2 minute tread, retrieving a brick from deep water and swimming 20 yards with it)
  • Ability to complete and demonstrate water rescue skills as per Red Cross standards
