Director of Bands
Qualifications:
- Valid South Carolina Teaching Certificate
- Minimum of Five Years Experience
- Experience Leading a Successful High School Band Program (Preferred)
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong leadership and motivational skills; expertise in instrumental pedagogy, marching design, and ensemble coordination; proficiency in music technology and performance software; effective communication, collaboration, and organizational abilities; commitment to fostering student achievement, creativity, and character.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Coordinate all elements of the band program, including instructional strategies, in grades 5-12. This task is to be performed in cooperation with the elementary principals, middle school principals, and the district Director of Fine Arts.
- Coordinate all elements of the Dorman marching band, Dorman Football Band, and District Six Winter Guard, including repertoire, designing, scheduling, and staffing.
- Maintain primary responsibility for instruction and performance of all band and color guard students at Dorman High School and Dorman Freshman Campus. The ensembles of Dorman High School and Dorman Freshman Campus will perform in all of the required yearly performances as identified in the District Six Bands Performance Requirements, unless excused by the principals of each school.
- Maintain primary responsibility for recruiting and retention of all band students at Dorman High School and Dorman Freshman Campus.
- Assign and monitor, in cooperation with school principals, duties and assignments for all district band staff as related to extra-curricular high school ensembles.
- Work in conjunction with the Director of Fine Arts to develop, implement, monitor, and update District Six Band curriculum and instruction standards.
- Preside over monthly band staff meetings. Maintain responsibility for communicating dates and meeting times to all parties and the Director of Fine Arts.
- Participate, along with school and district administrators, in the evaluation process of the district’s assistant band directors. This includes, but is not limited to, attendance at the district’s band rehearsals and performances.
- Maintain all appropriate professional memberships and affiliations purchased by the district (NAfME, SCMEA, SCBDA). This includes attending association meetings and participating in association business.
- Administer local school band budget, with oversight from the principal of Dorman High School and the District’s Director of Fine Arts.
- Administer District Six School-Owned instrument and equipment Inventories at Dorman High School. Repair or coordinate repairs of any District Six equipment and instruments.
- Administer band booster club budgets as appropriate.
- Present him/herself at all times as an advocate for District Six Schools in general and the arts program in particular.
- Communicate effectively with parents, administrators, and community partners to support the program’s mission.
- Maintain compliance with all district and state policies regarding student safety, supervision, and reporting.
- Encourage a positive, respectful, and inclusive environment for students and staff.
- Uphold the district’s commitment to high standards of academic and extracurricular excellence.
- Maintain a valid commercial driver’s license with proper certification to operate vehicles transporting students. Once obtained, the director will only drive his or her own students and ensembles. (This requirement may be waived in certain situations at the discretion of the school principal.)
- Perform any and all duties as assigned by the administration.
Working Conditions:
Conducts duties indoors and outdoors with exposure to heat, cold, dust, and heights. Duties of the job require physical exertion to lift and move objects weighing over 50 pounds. Requires the ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention and working with students. Requires evening and weekend work for rehearsals, performances, and competitions. Local travel and overnight travel are required. The job requires the operation of standard office equipment.
