What You Will Be Doing:
We inspect certain health facilities throughout the state to determine whether they meet state and federal standards, and we investigate complaints made against health facilities and agencies licensed or certified under our program. The purpose of our inspections is to determine a health care provider's ability to provide services that are safe and of an acceptable quality.

We also protect Alaska’s most vulnerable populations through our certification and licensing section. Who We Are Looking For:
  • Nursing: Knowledge of the principles, methodologies, practices, and procedures of professional nursing as they pertain to health promotion and the treatment and prevention of diseases, injuries, and/or abnormalities
  • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Investigation: Knowledge of the guidelines, regulations, and procedures associated with investigation, including interviewing, evidence detection, locating, gathering, and handling, and drawing appropriate factual inferences and conclusions. Provide oral or written reports of findings. Presenting evidence and providing testimony. 
Special Notice:
  • Requires frequent travel within the state, up to 1 week at a time, 1-2 times a month.
  • A valid Alaska Registered Nursing License is required, per the Alaska Nurse Practice Act: Nursing Statutes AS 08.68.
  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska.
AND
Any combination of education, certification, and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in

  • Technical Credibility: Understands and appropriately applies principles, procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to specialized expertise.
  • Evidence-Based Practice: integrates best research practices with clinical expertise and patient values for optimum care and participates in learning and research activities to the extent feasible.
  • Standards: Knowledge of standards that either are compliant with or derived from established standards or guidelines.
  • Reasoning: Identifies rules, principles, or relationships that explain facts, data, or other information; analyzes information and makes correct inferences or draws accurate conclusions.
  • Decision Making: Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.

equivalent to those typically gained by:

Completion of a post-secondary education program in nursing, public health, healthcare services, healthcare administration, or a closely related field;
AND
Progressively responsible professional nursing experience that includes responsibility in health care, public health, health care delivery systems, nursing administration, consultative nursing, and/or teaching capacity that is relevant to the position's area of nursing specialty.

Special Note 
Candidates not currently licensed by the State of Alaska, who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska and requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities, may apply for vacancies in this job class. Applicants qualifying under this option may receive a conditional job offer; however, proof of licensure will be required prior to final appointment and reporting for duty.
 
Some positions require eligibility for specific professional certifications in a specialty field or licensure in the State of Alaska, such as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Most positions require expertise in a health specialty field; recruitment and selection for these positions will be from among only those candidates who have the appropriate specialty background and experience.
  
The essential functions of some positions may involve exposure to infectious disease and/or biohazards. Some positions require travel to remote areas on short notice in small aircraft or boats.

Minimum Qualifications
