Responsibilities

This employment opportunity is restricted to Nunavut Inuit who reside in Rankin Inlet only.

Reporting to the Principal of the Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik School, the Ilinniarvimmi Inuusiliriji is a community resource person and student advocate who supports, promotes and involves students, parents and the community as partners in education, is an active member of the education staff and School Team, provides a liaison between the community, home, school and student, provides support and guidance to students, promotes the relevance of education in the community and fosters mutual understanding between the community and the school while promoting self-fulfillment and success in life for students and provides cultural resource to the school staff. 

Based on IQ principles, the Ilinniarvimmi Inuusiliriji influences and enhances relationships between the school and community, and supports greater understanding of the role of the school within the community, promotes resiliency and well-being in students as well as their safety, acceptance, understanding and self-confidence, while acting in compliance with the statutes, policies and regulations of the Department of Education, such as the Education Act, the Nunavut Child Abuse Protocol, the Nunavut Interagency Information Sharing Protocol and the Records Management Directive. 

With a patient, caring, student-centered attitude, the Ilinniarvimmi Inuusiliriji will facilitate communication links between the classroom, family, community and students, and establish and maintain a good rapport with all students, staff, and parents. This position also works with staff and students to identify solutions to student challenges and needs, such as attendance, academic and social emotional concerns, conflict resolution, advocating for students, promoting social, emotional, skill and knowledge development. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date confidential records, participate in training programs, professional reading and mentorship, participate in regional and territorial meetings, teleconferences and committees, and act as an interpreter as directed and serve as a member of a crisis response team.   

Qualifications

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained from a Grade 12 Diploma or an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered, and two (2) years or more years of experience working at community level with children. The candidate should also have a literacy in computers such as Word and Excel, and First Aid, Mental Health First Aid Training and ASIST training is an asset.  This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
