The Substitute Nurse position is responsible for the delivery of essential health services at the building level as it pertains to services, policies, and procedures. The Substitute Nurse works collaboratively with the Health Services Facilitator, the Executive Director of Student Services and building administration to ensure the health and wellness of students and staff.
Rate of Pay: $28.00/hour
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the assignment and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties.
1. Communicates with families, staff and community liaisons to interpret and facilitate the transfer of health data;
2. Changes dressings;
3. Counsels staff, parents and students regarding health needs including pregnant and parenting teens;
4. Depending upon the age of the student population for which health services are being provided, may initiate the permanent health record;
5. Distributes and maintains records of controlled drugs and insures their security;
6. Documents nursing interventions on medical records;
7. Ensures cleanliness of equipment and environment;
8. Establishes, maintains, reviews and updates student health records on an ongoing basis;
9. Facilitates connections to community primary health and dental providers and, at times, facilitates transportation and funding for health and dental appointments;
10. Independently implements the nursing process with students including carrying out physicians orders regarding diet, medication and treatment; performs assessments;
11. Instructs students, staff and family members regarding treatments, nursing plans and related patient care issues directed toward an awareness and understanding of health issues;
12. Interprets medical records to the school staff, as necessary;
13. Interprets vision and hearing results, including tympanometry, and determines the need for rescreening or referral. Monitors ongoing hearing and vision concerns;
14. Keeps current on local, State and national health issues and concerns;
15. Maintains availability of medications and supplies;
16. Maintains records and makes reports including records for third-party billings;
17. Makes decisions in routine cases;
18. Monitors and ensures quality care through observation and evaluation;
19. Organizes and facilitates community advisory boards regarding input, review and approval of health plans;
20. Provides for the direct care and assessment of children in the classrooms, including lice screening;
21. Provides health counseling;
22. Reports on physiological and mental health status of students;
23. Responds to emergencies;
24. Reviews and assesses health histories, medical information, including State-mandated immunizations;
25. Reviews and facilitates health evaluations of children and families;
26. Reviews objective data, such as temperature, color, and lung sounds, to determine the state of health;
27. Reviews the past and current health history of each child to determine eligibility for specialized programs and for ongoing health and dental needs;
28. Supervises and provides for the administration of medications, as needed;
29. Teaches various health-related issues, such as bloodborne pathogens, puberty issues, and hygiene, to students and staff;
30. Works with the staff and community medical resources regarding linking health and medical needs;
31. Performs related duties as assigned.

10. Knowledge of current medications, their actions, interactions, uses and side effects;
11. Knowledge of medical, therapeutic and psychiatric nursing interventions and methods;
12. Knowledge of pediatric nursing;
13. Some knowledge of related technology, such as insulin pumps and nebulizers;
14. Some knowledge of special needs children, special education, pregnant and parenting teens;
15. Interpersonal skills;
16. Skill in administering and interpreting specific health screening and assessment tools;
17. Skill in administering medications, including safety and adverse reactions;
18. Skill in basic computer literacy;
19. Skill in cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
20. Skill in organizational and time management;
21. Skill in otoscopy, audiometry (pure-tone screening), and tympanometry;
22. Skill in performing height and weight measurements;
23. Skill in physical assessment and observation, such as BP, skin color, breath sounds, lice screenings, and blood glucose assessment;
24. Skill in verbal and written communication, especially report writing;
25. Skill in vision screening using Snellen/MOTV charts;
26. Ability to act as a role model to health care staff by demonstrating professional behaviors;
27. Ability to analyze and evaluate proper care and treatment;
28. Ability to develop therapeutic relationships with students;
29. Ability to encourage and facilitate cooperation, pride trust and group identity to foster commitment and teamwork;
30. Ability to listen and provide empathetic assistance to students and families in meeting their needs and carrying out prescribed treatments;
31. Ability to respond to emergencies;
32. Ability to work in a fast paced environment;
33. Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
1. Graduation from an accredited nursing program;
2. Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License;
3. First Aid, CPR and AED Certification preferred;
4. Child Hearing and Vision Testing Certification preferred;
5. Fluency in Spanish and English is preferred;
6. Experience working in a school environment preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Individuals appointed to these assignments must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the assignment.
Reports To:
This job assignment falls under the direction of the Executive Director of Student Services.
