Job Title: Equipment Operator - Streets
 
Reports to: Crew Superintendent - Streets
 
Department: Public Works 
 
Work Hours: 7:30 am – 3:30 pm weekdays; Seasonal Summer hours, 6:30am - 3:00pm; every other weekend; some evenings, and holidays.
 
Starting Salary: $40,726 - $48,402 Annually DOQ (Non-Exempt)
 
 
 
Major Responsibilities:
 
  • Strong working knowledge of streets maintenance, repair, and construction practices.
  • Operates diesel or gasoline powered earth-moving and trenching equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, excavators, skid steers, and dump trucks.
  • Uses and changes equipment attachments (buckets, forks, hydraulic tools, etc.) to perform tasks including excavating, loading, leveling, trenching, and backfilling.
  • Operates various vehicles, motorized equipment, and power tools to perform maintenance and construction on the City's streets, sidewalks, curbs, and signage.
  • Reads and interprets specifications related to street, curb, and sidewalk construction or repair work.
  • Performs pothole patching, sidewalk installation and repair, curb and gutter construction, street striping, and traffic sign installation and maintenance.
  • Drives vehicles and transports heavy equipment to job sites, including towing with trailers; must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Performs inspections and routine maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and proper operation.
  • Reports safety concerns, operational issues, or needed repairs to the Streets Crew Supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Leads or assists with on-site coordination of crew members during daily maintenance activities; ensures work is performed efficiently, safely, and in accordance with City standards.
  • Flags and directs traffic safely around work zones in compliance with local and MUTCD standards.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment hours using iPad/iPhone or other assigned devices.
  • Assists in training new or less-experienced crew members on proper equipment use, safety practices, and work procedures.
  • Responds to emergency situations such as downed signs, road hazards, or storm-related street damage, including after-hours call-outs as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications & Physical Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.  
  • Vocational or technical school training preferred.   
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Valid State of Georgia driver's license (Valid Class A commercial driver’s license required) with a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR). 
  • References verifying 5+ years of work experience in performing comparable duties with similar equipment and tools. 
  • Basic proficiency with computers, iPads/iPhones, and software applications used for work orders, time tracking, and reporting.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen.

Requires physical strength and agility to lift/move objects up to 100 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods, daily. Ability to work in a variety of extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time including heat and rain. Must be able to physically operate all vehicles, equipment, and tools. Must be able to perform work while being exposed to dust, pollen, allergens, exhaust fumes, herbicide chemicals, etc. Must be available for emergency call-in on weekends, evenings, and holidays.
