Buncombe County is hiring for a Social Worker Assistant/ Visitation Coach position. This individual will report to the Visitation Program Supervisor. The Social Worker Assistant/Visitation Team is a team of five who work together to support the visitation needs of families working with Buncombe County Health and Human Services.

The primary goal of the Social Worker Assistant/Visitation Team is to provide supervised visits between children and their families, offering support, guidance and coaching to improve interactions and parenting skills. They help families understand children’s needs, demonstrate appropriate behaviors, and work towards positive family relationships. This role often involves observing interactions, providing feedback and documenting visit progress.

This position will be in-person at the GRACE Center in Asheville and may include travel within the community and/or out of county. The work hours will be Monday – Friday between the hours of 8AM-7PM depending on the needs of the Team. This is a 40 hour per week position.

The Start Date for this position will be November 17 or December 1, 2025 .

The selected candidate for this position will be required to submit to a drug test. Please note that CBD or Delta-9 Hemp products may cause a positive drug test.
 

Purpose of the position:

The purpose of this position is to provide Family Time Coaching services for children and their families in the custody of Buncombe County Health and Human Services Social Work Division. Additionally, this position will provide support for transportation needs for foster youth, sitting with foster youth in the office with no placement options, and providing childcare support for community groups held at The GRACE Center.

Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): Associate's degree in Human Services and one (1) year experience in Human Services; or High School Diploma or GED, and two (2) years’ experience in Human Services field.

Additional/Preferred Education, Training and/or Experience: Triple P training certified and Training in Circle of Security. English/Spanish bi-lingual speakers preferred.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: A current, valid driver's license

Essential Functions of the position:

  • Coordinate and provide supervised visitation services to children in the custody of BCHHS.
  • Provide transportation to and from visitations as needed. 
  • Support the functioning of The GRACE Center.
  • Complete administrative tasks to support Social Work Team
  • Provide supervision for foster youth in the office with no identified placement.
  • Providing childcare support for community groups held at The GRACE Center.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of social work principles, techniques and practices and their application to specific casework and community problems.
  • Ability to prioritize, identify, and assess risks, problems and needs often in stressful situations with clients who are hostile, emotionally confused, and resistant.
  • Skilled in establishing constructive relationships with resistant clients  and  utilizing  family-centered  social  work practice.
  • Knowledge of manuals governing service criteria, required documentation and accountability procedures.
  • Ability to effectively de-escalate individuals.
  • Triple P training certified.
  • Training in Circle of Security.
