IT INTERN PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

An internship program offers an opportunity for students enrolled in an IT related program to gain real world experience. It will give them a chance to see what it would be like to work at Prairie Knights while also giving us an opportunity to observe the students’ work habits and capabilities. The program would expand our potential hiring pool when IT Technician positions become available.

The intern position will attend new employee orientation like any other employee. From there, they will join the IT department for departmental orientation to learn the basics of the department structure and expectations. After that departmental training will begin. This will be a limited version, based on the gaming license granted to the intern. If they have a key gaming license, they can perform all functions that a regular IT Technician can, however, training will be limited to what can be accomplished during their duration of internship. If they have a non-gaming license they will be limited in functions accordingly.

Non-gaming licensed interns will be excluded from accessing the gaming software or explicit gaming areas (eg. Soft Count). If they are under 21, they will not be allowed any area that minors are not allowed, such as in the bar areas, however, they may be able remotely support users via telephone and/or remote access software.

Typical tasks/skills that interns will learn:

  • Active Directory – creating & deleting users/resetting passwords
  • Exchange – creating mailboxes
  • Helpdesk software – creating/updating work requests and logging all incidents and work performed
  • Desktop support/customer service skills
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Scheduling/time clock use
  • Punctuality/work ethic/employer expectations
  • Cabling – terminating
  • VMware – virtualization concepts/virtual desktops
  • Data backups – backup to disk/tape/cloud
  • Disk imaging – cloning or “Ghosting” desktops for deployment
  • Network switches – configuring ports/vlans
  • Hotel property management system
  • F&B Point of Sale software
  • PBX system – configuring phones and extensions

Tasks and responsibilities will be determined, in part, by program of study, personal skills, learning aptitude, personal interests, as well as gaming license level and departmental needs.

IT Interns will meet with the IT Director at least bi-weekly to review status, give/receive feedback, and overall check-in.

IT Interns will spend some of their time as what is often referred to in the industry as “Tier 1 Desktop Support”, staffing the IT Help Desk phone line and answering calls/creating work orders. If the call is within their scope of knowledge, they may be able to resolve the call themselves or may pass the work order to another Technician.

The IT Intern Program should be considered a win/win/win situation for the student, the college, and the casino.
