Duties

Develop and implement programs based on national safety standard requirements.,Establish goals for the Safety and Occupational Health Program for overseeing the regulatory worksite evaluation program, the collection and maintenance of records/accident statistics, and the execution of other programs.,Direct the inspections and observations of environmental conditions and employee performance patterns to identify hazards and detect risks.,Coordinate the investigation of mishaps searching for clues, studying variables, questioning witnesses and retracing sequences to uncover the sources of reported injuries and illnesses.,Oversee and conduct investigations of incidents involving injury and/or property loss.,Train staff, contractors, and other supported activities in safety and occupational health requirements and safe work practices sufficient to assure a safe work environment.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting safety or occupational health or patient safety surveys within a medical facility; performing inspections at clinic worksites on things such as environmental conditions, machine or equipment operations, protective devices and equipment, work practices, safety procedures, etc.; and educating employees or managers regarding safety or occupational health or patient safety regulations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
