Purpose:


Supports the Hollenbeck Palms Transportation Department by safely operating company vehicles—including buses requiring a Class B license—to transport residents to medical appointments, social outings, and community events. This hybrid role serves as both a scheduled and backup driver while also providing support to the Activities, Wellness, and other departments during non-driving hours. The position contributes to resident engagement, smooth departmental operations, and consistent service coverage.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate Class B vehicles (and other fleet vehicles as assigned) to transport residents to and from scheduled appointments, activities, and community outings.
  • Serve as a backup bus driver, filling in when the primary CDL-B driver or other scheduled drivers are unavailable.
  • Provide courteous and safe assistance to residents entering and exiting vehicles.
  • Perform daily pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, reporting and documenting any maintenance issues.
  • Maintain cleanliness, proper fueling, and readiness of all company vehicles.
  • Ensure first aid kits, emergency supplies, and required safety equipment are stocked and functional.
  • Carry and appropriately use a company-issued cell phone in accordance with hands-free laws.
  • Assist with package deliveries, errands, and other transportation-related tasks as directed.
  • Observe and report resident condition changes to the Nurse in Charge or Supervisor.
  • Assist with incident documentation related to resident care, safety, or transportation events.
  • Collaborate with the Activities and Wellness team to help coordinate, set up, and support resident programs and outings when not driving.
  • Provide general support to other departments during downtime or when driving duties are not required.
  • Maintain accountability for understanding and following company and department policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

Requirements

  • Valid California Class B Commercial Driver’s License (required).
  • Clean driving record (no more than 2 traffic violations in the past 3 years; no DUIs).
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain upon hire. 
  • Must pass Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI criminal background checks.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working with older adults, preferably in a senior living or healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of working with individuals with Alzheimer's/Dementia preferred.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and physical exam.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written).
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to remain calm, courteous, and responsive in emergency situations.

  • Must meet the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) Medical standards to drive commercial vehicles.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle.
  • Must have sufficient strength and coordination to assist residents with entering and exiting vehicles safely, including use of wheelchair lifts and securement systems.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally push or pull up to 100 pounds (e.g., mobility devices, carts).
  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, walking, and standing may be required.
  • Must possess visual and auditory acuity to safely operate a motor vehicle, observe resident conditions, and respond to emergency situations.
  • Use of hands and arms is required for vehicle operation and assistance-related tasks.
  • Must be able to tolerate outdoor weather conditions and potential exposure to moderate noise and cleaning agents.
