About Us:
The City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department is split into two distinct areas:
  • The Parks Division manages and maintains all public parks, open spaces, trails, storm water retention basins, landscaping at municipal facilities and Thunderbird Conservation Park. The Division is also responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety and security of park and facility use.
  • The Recreation Division offers opportunities to enhance the social, physical, mental and economic health of our community through a variety of diverse recreation programs and facilities. Recreation programs and events are held at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Glendale Adult Center, Historic Sahuaro Ranch, the five community centers and at basketball, tennis, skate courts and other recreation facilities throughout the city.

The Role:

Operates heavy construction equipment in the Parks Division and performs semi-skilled and skilled construction, inspection, maintenance and repair work in assigned area of responsibility.

Salary:
This position is:
  • FLSA non-exempt, and will earn overtime for any hours worked over 40 in a week.
  • A Grade 313 with with an hourly rate between $23.7721 and $35.6582.

Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Leave:

Regular status positions offer:
  • The City of Glendale observes 10.5 holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays throughout the calendar year. 
  • Vacation leave accrues at:
    •  5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours/17.25* days per year)
    • Increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years
    • Then caps out at 7.6 hours after 10 years of service.
  • Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours/14.25 days* per year).

* Days per year estimates are based on an 8-hour work day. 

Retirement:

Position Duties

  1. Inspects playground equipment for hazard identification and safety compliance.
  2. Documents any damage to playground equipment and determines procedure to bring equipment into compliance.
  3. Interfaces with playground equipment manufacture to order replacement parts and/or replace sections of equipment.
  4. Assembles and installs bike racks, benches, tables, signage and gates.
  5. Performs welding repair and fabrication on various parks and recreation equipment.
  6. Repairs drinking fountains; replaces or rebuilds valves, water lines, and other parts; unclogs drains.
  7. Operates power tools to repair equipment.
  8. Operates heavy construction equipment including front-end loader, backhoe, and trencher.
  9. Sets up preventative maintenance schedule on playground equipment.
  10. Performs minor repair and routine maintenance on the equipment such as cleaning, fueling, maintaining tire pressure, and inspecting engine, transmission, steering, brakes, and hydraulic system.
  11. Keeps daily log on work done.
  12. Pours concrete and finishes concrete.
  13. Installs and/or repairs chain link fence and poles.
  14. Installs and repairs playground equipment.
  15. Digs holes for trees and assists in planting.
  16. Operates city vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment and a minimum of one year in fence installation and repair and one year of concrete work.

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.  

Knowledge of:

  • Playground layout and design, safety surfacing, and infrastructure and safety practices and management
  • Operation of heavy construction equipment
  • Hazards, safety rules and precautions associated with the operation of heavy equipment and in public works construction and maintenance
  • Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation
  • Chain link fence repair and installation
  • Concrete pouring and leveling

Ability to:

  • Test and re-certify every three years for Certified Playground Safety Inspector
  • Install and repair playground equipment Coordinate eye-hand-foot movements
  • Service, adjust and make minor repairs to heavy construction equipment
  • Fill out reports, daily logs and journals
  • Perform heavy lifting up to 75 lbs
  • Work at a height of 6 to 8 feet off a stepladder
  • Stretch chain link fence and perform total installation and repair
  • Pour and finish concrete
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Operate city vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Special Requirements:

  • Certification on the National Playground Safety Institute's Certified Playground Safety Inspectors' Course and Examination within 9 months of hire.
  • Class B Commercial driver's license within 6 months of hire.
  • This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.

Requires climbing up into equipment, bending, stooping, crawling, and lifting of up to 75 pounds. Enters, exits, and operates city vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
