Position Overview:
Under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator, this role organizes, conducts, and oversees recreation programs, classes, and sports activities. The position also leads part-time staff at a park site or community center and performs other duties as assigned.

Position Duties

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Supervision is received from the Recreation Coordinator. This classification does not exercise formal supervision but serves as a lead for Recreation Leaders.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Organize, conduct, and oversee recreation programs, classes, and sports activities.

  • Lead part-time staff at a park site or community center.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of organized recreation and sports programs.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely with co-workers, children, and parents of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

  • Coach and demonstrate proper procedures, skills, and techniques for sports and games.

  • Organize and coordinate recreational programs.

  • Interpret official rules and procedures for organized sport activities.

  • Identify potential hazards and implement safety procedures.

  • Maintain knowledge of basic first-aid principles and practices.

  • Ability to communicate in Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese (Mandarin), or Universal Sign Language is a plus.

  • Perform related duties as required or assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • One (1) year of experience, paid or volunteer, working with children or the community in recreational settings.

  • One (1) year of lead experience.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must maintain a valid First Aid Certificate or equivalent issued by an authorized agency within 90 days of employment.

  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License at the time of employment

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently required to walk, run, sit, talk, or hear.

  • Occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls.

  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.

  • Occasionally required to climb or balance.

  • Must stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequently works in outside weather conditions.

  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals.

  • Noise level is usually moderately loud when in the field.
