Job Overview
The Driver Instructor assists the Transportation Area Supervisor in charge of training and the Team Leader with interviews for hiring, classroom instruction for drivers, behind-the-wheel, on-the-job, and re-training instruction, and other duties as requested.
Roles and Responsibilities
The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.
- Coordinates and instructs all areas of training and staff education provided by the Training Division
- Assists with new hire interviews
- Assists in the preparation of materials for training purposes
- Performs field and ride-along observations as needed
- Serves as a bus driver, bus attendant, or transport driver, as needed
- Maintains recertification records of all current drivers and attendants
Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications
Commercial Driver’s License with school bus and passenger endorsements for a minimum of 2 years
In the state of Virginia (VA Code Section 46.2-341.4), and specifically when referencing the commercial driver’s license (CDL), an “employee” is defined as:
- a payroll employee
- a person employed under a lease or contract or a person who has applied for employment and whose employment is contingent upon obtaining a CDL
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Meets requirements for School Bus Driver
- Obtains certification within six months of employment as a Virginia School Bus Driver Trainer, First Aid, and CPR Instructor
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions fluently in English, and to communicate effectively
- Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, bus drivers, bus attendants, parents, and the general public
- Ability to complete the DOT mandated Drug and Alcohol Suspicion Training for Supervisors within the first 90 days of employment
- Knowledge of office procedures and ability to use general office software

Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
