Position Summary
The History and Social Sciences Department seeks a passionate and collaborative educator for a full-time teaching position (1.0 FTE) in the Upper School. This role involves teaching History courses to students of varying ages and abilities while fostering critical thinking, analytical research, argumentative writing, and collaborative listening and discussion skills. The ideal candidate will bring enthusiasm for student-centered learning, a commitment to inclusive and engaging instruction, and a dedication to continuous professional growth. They will also demonstrate creativity, innovation, and a reflective approach to teaching while helping students develop confidence in their critical analysis of the past and ability to persuasively share their interpretations. Additionally, this educator should value collaboration, contribute to a dynamic department, and cultivate a supportive and engaging classroom environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Teach five sections of history, including 9th-grade Historical Foundations 1, Historical Foundations II, and 11th-grade US History.
- Participate in grade-level and division-level teams (s) and their activities, including experiential learning opportunities, such as class trips and Interim, etc.
- Participate in all-school, division, and department meetings
- Maintain and grow professional skills by pursuing relevant professional development opportunities
- Perform any other related duties that may be assigned by upper school and senior administration
Skills and Requirements
- B.A. degree in History or related humanities field required; advanced degree preferred;
- Has significant teaching experience with a commitment to developing research and writing skills;
- Is fluent in using a wide variety of technologies, including Canvas, to support and enhance the student learning experience;
- Has the ability to work with students at different grade and skill levels;
- Is committed to giving frequent and thoughtful feedback to student writing;
- Demonstrates cultural competency and a commitment to classroom management and curriculum development that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion;
- Has the ability to collaborate with department colleagues to follow or adapt the shared curriculum to provide similar skills and content for all students within a grade level;
- Can create and adapt curriculum to further the school’s strategic priorities;
- Is interested in collaborating with members of other departments and community institutions to encourage interdisciplinary thinking and real-world impact.
Additional Information
This is a full-time, exempt position, and reports to the Upper School Division Head. Compensation is based on level of education and years of relevant experience. We’re looking forward to having someone join our team in this role as soon as possible.
