About the Department

Support the Bays Mountain Park mission by providing interactive recreational, educational, and interpretive experiences for guests of all ages. Assists primarily with astronomy and planetarium programming, while assisting with park events, community outreach, and supporting day-to-day operations as needed. 

Position Duties

  • Deliver engaging astronomy and space sciences, environmental education, recreational, and interpretive programs for school groups, families, and general park visitors.
  • Assist with the daily operations of the planetarium theater, observatories, and other related program facilities. 
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repair of planetarium and observatory equipment and computer infrastructure.
  • Operate the barge and facilitate interpretive programming on the barge.
  • Facilitate astronomy programming and perform basic operational functions of the planetarium.
  • Adapt programs to meet the needs of diverse audiences, including children, adults, and special interest groups.
  • Assist in the coordination and execution of special events, festivals, and seasonal public programs.
  • Assist in conducting training of student interns and volunteers.
  • Provide visitor support and maintain a welcoming presence in high-traffic areas of the park, including the nature center and trails.
  • Respond to visitor questions and concerns.
  • Support recordkeeping of attendance, program evaluations, and daily reports.
  • Participate in staff training sessions, safety drills, and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist with routine cleaning, organization, and light maintenance of program spaces and visitor areas.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of principles of astronomy, educational techniques, and planetarium sciences;
  • Knowledge of principles of environmental education and interpretation;
  • Knowledge of celestial (day & night) observing techniques and equipment;
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service and visitor safety practices;
  • Ability to use Apple, PC, and specialized computers and software;
  • Ability to work in lowlight environments, both indoor and outdoor;
  • Ability to learn natural and cultural history relevant to the local park ecosystem;
  • Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing;
  • Skill in delivering engaging and inclusive educational programs;
  • Skill in working both independently and cooperatively with staff, volunteers, and community partners.

Other Qualifications

High School graduate or high school equivalent. Six months experience in a related field. Candidate must possess a valid TN/VA driver’s license. College course work in environmental science, biology, education, or related field is preferred. Experience working with children or the public in an educational or recreational setting is preferred. CPR/ First Aid certification preferred with the ability to obtain.
