POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Lower School teaching assistant position is an exciting opportunity for an individual dedicated to young learners' academic, social, and emotional growth to join a dynamic teaching faculty. The teaching assistant will work collaboratively with the lead teachers to ensure a warm and nurturing environment while assisting the lead teacher with behavioral and academic expectations. Teaching assistants work closely with students in whole class, small groups, and one-on-one settings.
QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS
The ideal Lower School teaching assistant has strong interpersonal skills, takes initiative, and thrives as a project manager. The candidate must be flexible yet organized. A genuine affection for children, a belief in every child�s ability to learn and grow, and a dedication to doing what is best for students are necessary for being a successful teacher at The Walker School. In addition, the candidate should have a positive mindset, a sense of humor, comfort with a quick pace of change, and openness to collaboration and experimentation. The ideal candidate is also willing to participate in professional learning opportunities and demonstrates a strong desire to learn more about elementary education. All Walker teachers are expected to model ethics, accept personal responsibility for their actions, and demonstrate a commitment to the school and its policies.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Assist in the implementation of the daily program under the direction of the lead teachers
- Assist in the coordination of classroom-related activities and events that support the grade-level
- Assist with communication with parents, colleagues (grade level and whole school), and with the Lower School administrative team
- Support the maintenance of accurate and comprehensive records of each child�s performance and progress, especially during reporting periods
- Assist in planning and preparing a pleasant, organized learning environment setting up and preparing needed materials and supplies
- Coordinate and attend a variety of field trips with attention to detail and logistics management
- Supervise the classroom when the lead teacher is out of the room
- Supervise students during arrival, dismissal, lunch, and recess regularly
- Monitor and assist in directing the appropriate behavior of students
- Care for and nurture the social and emotional needs of the students
- Participate in the life of the school by coaching or advising extracurricular activities
CORE QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor�s degree
- Experience working with elementary-aged students
Preferred Qualifications
- Elementary or Early Childhood degree
- Experience and or training in:
- Responsive Classroom
- Orton-Gillingham
- Math in Focus
- Handwriting without Tears
- Experience with technology integration
