Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The Sr. Geotechnical Engineer provides technical expertise and leadership in pit stability, monitoring, and design optimization to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant mine operations.

- Leadership & Safety: Uphold Capstone Copper’s Values—Always Accountable, Execute with Excellence, Deliver Results, and Work Responsibly. Maintain high safety, environmental, and operational standards across all geotechnical activities. Support Technical Services leadership in ensuring compliance with company policies, MSHA regulations, and site procedures.
- Geotechnical Monitoring & Analysis: Lead pit slope monitoring programs, including prism data collection, radar systems, and Leica software. Maintain alarm thresholds, manage data quality, and coordinate vendor maintenance. Perform slope stability analyses, validate highwall and bench designs, and assess blast performance to ensure slope integrity.
- Field Operations & Hazard Management: Conduct regular pit inspections and communicate geotechnical hazards to mine operations. Coordinate with production teams to resolve rockfall, filled bench, and blasting issues. Maintain stormwater ponds and update stormwater management plans as required.
- Design & Planning: Manage sequencing and development of waste and leach dumps to ensure geotechnical stability. Develop short- and mid-range dump designs, oversee horizontal drilling, dewatering wells, and piezometer installations. Provide technical input for drill and blast timing optimization to reduce wall damage.
- Governance & Reporting: Work with the Geotechnical QP to ensure compliance with Capstone standards and industry best practices. Prepare technical reports, design validations, and recommendations to support mine planning and operations. Review and update SOPs and geotechnical standards based on current site conditions.
- Mentorship & Continuous Improvement: Mentor junior engineers and analysts, strengthening technical capability within the team. Drive continuous improvement through enhanced monitoring systems, data analytics, and slope performance optimization. Provide 24/7 on-call support for geotechnical issues and lead assigned projects or contractor oversight.
- Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and initiative.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Required
- Bachelor’s in Mining Engineer, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering or similar.
- Ability to work outdoors and in ambient weather conditions
- 7-12 years mining experience
- Able to speak, comprehend, read, and write English
- Valid Driver's License
Preferred
- Open Pit experience
