Summary:

Applicant must posses a High School diploma or equivalent and experience working with individuals with disabilities.  California Drivers License with a safe driving record, required. Must have current CPR certification that complies with the guidelines set by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation. The Patient Escort is responsible for safely transporting patients to and from medical facilities, assisting with appointments, interpreting instructions, and guiding patients between vehicles, buildings, and offices. Strong oral communication skills, a flexible work schedule, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality are essential. Must be able to work with the Indian community and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Transport patients and/or family in situations where there is no family member available to assume this responsibility in order to assure accessibility to services, i.e., medical, social services, etc.
  • Communicates to Outreach Manager or Director of any problems or findings regarding patients that warrant follow-up care.
  • Utilizes safety measures in all transports, i.e., locks vehicle when carrying prescription, locks wheelchairs when carrying handicapped, etc.
  • For reasons of safety for infants and toddlers up to 40 pounds, infant care seats shall be used when they are transported in company-owned or leased vehicles.
  • Safety belts shall be worn by Patient Escorts and all patients during patient transportation or other official business of the program.
  • Responsible for the end of the month reports, mileage logs, and auto inspection forms which are due on the third working day of each month to immediate supervisor.
  • Responsible for consistently maintaining vehicle in a clean and tidy manner.  Preventive maintenance done on a timely basis.
  • Responsible for accompanying all patients to medical facility, assisting them in making appointments, interpreting instructions, and for guiding them to and from the building, vehicles and different offices.
  • Does not compromise patient confidentiality.
  • Positive and courteous interactions with patients and families, as well as other staff.
  • Responsible for attending quarterly department meetings.
  • Responsible for delivery of medications, patient supplies or equipment, newsletters, pamphlets, and other educational materials, as assigned.
  • Safely and properly operates vehicle’s wheelchair lift with consideration for patients’ disabilities and abilities.
  • Responsible for reporting to work promptly at scheduled time.  Uses sick leave appropriately, per organizational policies.
  • Responsible for notifying supervisor between 4:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M. of late transportation on a daily basis.
  • This position shall require working on the weekends, early and late hours beyond routine operation hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Education:                            

High school diploma or equivalent. 

 

Certification:

Must have current CPR certification that complies with the guidelines set by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation.

 

Experience:                           

Have experience working with people with disabilities.  Job requires a lot of traveling from site to site to relieve work for other drivers during illness, leave, and to meet patient needs.

 

Skill:           

Must have clear and effective oral communication skills.

 

License:           

Must possess a valid California driver’s license and a safe driving record. A current DMV printout is required before hiring, and then biannually. Must be insurable by the corporation’s insurance carrier. Must demonstrate auto and patient safety.

  • Work with the Indian population in the service area and gain their confidence and acceptance; have empathetic understanding of and willingness to work with Native American population in the service area; be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.
  • Maintain records.  Read and write at level for satisfactory job performance.
  • Have basic computer skills. Enter appointments into system, respond to emails, print documents, etc.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Required to drive over hazardous road conditions if the need arises.
  • Assist patients by supporting and guiding to and from vehicles and buildings; must be able to push patient in wheelchair.
  • Required to lift, load, and transport equipment.  Provides courier service to patients/clinic consisting of mailbags, packages and other bulky items.
  • Requires sitting for long periods of time either in vehicle or office settings.
  • Required to guide, load, and transport disabled people.
  • There is some infrequent exposure to unstable and/or hostile patients, and frequent exposure to contagious diseases.

Salary:

$43,680.00 ($21.00)
