GENERAL PURPOSE

Sponsored by the Springfield Public Schools, the Springfield All City Jazz consists of the area’s finest young musicians. Membership is by audition and is open to both Springfield Public School High School students as well as other highly qualified High School aged musicians from the surrounding area. Membership numbers range from year to year based on auditions and literature. 

 

The role of the Assistant Director for the Springfield All City Jazz ensures ensemble runs smoothly and works with the director by completing assigned tasks and collaborating to support the program. The season extends from August through May with rehearsals typically on Monday evenings with at least two concerts per year.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Library/Literature work
  • Setting up sectionals and chair auditions
  • Serving on the judge’s panel for new auditions
  • Co-directing rehearsals and conducting with head director
  • Completing delegated tasks assigned from the head director as appropriate
  • Experience in conducting and teaching large ensembles
  • Knowledge of jazz literature and repertoire
  • Coordinate with fellow honor ensembles, site administrative assistants, and the activities or fine arts office for scheduling, approval for contests, etc.
  • Communicate with regional band directors to recruit for the program
  • Communicate with students and parents as needed pertaining to the schedule, concerts, contest, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • Instrumental Music K-12 teaching degree/certification preferred
  • 5+ years of teaching experience and/or conducting experience preferred (preferably with jazz band experience)
  • A music performance degree could be considered if the applicant isn’t a certified teacher.

 

Certificates, Licenses and Other Special Requirements

 

  • Must pass a Criminal Background Clearance, the results of which must be satisfactory to the District, required.

  • Knowledge of algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems.
  • Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; age appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Work environment is primarily inside, where the noise and temperature levels are moderate.
  • The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
  • Must possess the physical ability to perceive the nature of sounds, make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, express or exchange ideas by the spoken word, substantial movements (motions) with the hands, wrists, and/or fingers, and discern letters or numbers at a given distance. 
  • Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, manual dexterity, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity and walking.
